March Madness

Basketball Competition

Given the current Covid guidelines in schools, a decision was made to postpone all Term 1 interschool basketball fixtures and carnivals. As a Specialised Basketball school, we looked into how students could be rewarded for the commitment they have shown to start the year while allowing them an opportunity to showcase their basketball growth individually and as a team.

Mr Godfrey (Director of Sport) and Colin (Specialised Basketball Coach) were excited to announce a new initiative - Canons March Madness. Held during Week 9, the early-morning sessions consisted of students being split into year group teams and playing on their allocated training day. We played four 10-minute quarters with qualified officials and the games were scored, filmed and - to the students' delight - statistics were taken (all of which were shared with students, staff and parents and guardians).

To make the games special we decided that teams will be made via a draft system.  Mr Godfrey and Mr Houwen coached/drafted one team (The Bulldogs) and Colin coached/drafted the other (The Cobras). Teams were announced via the Canons Sport Instagram page daily.

Watch by early-to-school spectators, the tournament began with the Seniors on Monday and concluded with the Year 7s on Friday. It was a strong learning experience for our players, with the students learning how to work as a team, demonstrate excellent team spirit and show a high level of sportsmanship.

Scores:

  • Monday Seniors – Cobras 62 defeat Bulldogs 60 (Standouts – Ethan Port-Louis 36 points 7-9 3pt, Tyler Madigan 16 points 7 rebounds and Jesse Overmars 16 points 4 steals)
  • Tuesday Year 10s – Bulldogs 36 defeat Cobras 31 (Standouts – Benjamin Paddon 14 points 11 rebounds, Joshua Welsh 12 points and Oliver Graham 11 points 5 rebounds).
  • Wednesday Year 9s - Postponed
  • Thursday Year 8s – Bulldogs 55 defeat Cobras 49 (Standouts – Anthony Flores 12 points 3 assists, Reece Anticevic 12 Points 4 assists & Jalen Dunstan 12 points 2/2 3pt).
  • Friday Year 7s- Bulldogs 84 Cobras 59 (Standouts – Andre Dweh 52 points 4-7 3pt, Luke Trevenen 24 points 4 rebounds and Jack Murphy 15 points 7 assists).

Continuing sports for students as we go through the pandemic is complicated and requires consolidated efforts, but it is essential. We hope that this initiative is something we can include in to the program and build upon each year.
