Canning River systems

Kent Street Weir excursion

On Monday, 14 March the Year 12 Integrated Science class visited the Canning River Eco Centre (CREEC) in Wilson to learn about the local aquatic environment. Students participated in two hands-on programs which investigated the water quality at two locations. The Kent Street Weir provides a unique location to compare two river systems of the Canning River.

In the Testing H2O activity, students used field equipment to assess abiotic features such as pH (acidity), salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and nutrient levels both upstream and downstream of the Weir.

In the Signals in the Stream activity, students studied samples of water from the river and identified, classified and counted aquatic macro-invertebrates.  The results were discussed and used to give a snap shot of the water quality in the area.

The weather was perfect for the excursion and the students enjoyed the hands-on activities as well as the chance to investigate abiotic features in a picturesque environment so close to the College.  The class would like to thank Megan at CREEC who ran the activities and Ms Tersigni who accompanied us.
