Acting Principal’s Report

Dear families and carers,

I wanted to share with you our school’s Annual Implementation Plan (AIP), that sets the vision and direction for our school, for the next 12 months.

The Education State sets our 2022 Priority Goals:

Some of our students have thrived in the remote learning environment, others have maintained their learning progress, and some need extra learning and wellbeing support despite the best efforts of their teachers and families. In 2022 we will continue to focus on student learning - with an increased focus on numeracy - and student wellbeing through the 2022 Priorities Goal, a learning Key Improvement Strategy and a wellbeing Key Improvement Strategy.

At Moreland PS, our goals include the following:-

1. Learning - Support both those who need extra support and those who have thrived to continue to extend their learning, especially in numeracy.

2. Wellbeing - Effectively mobilise available resources to support students' wellbeing and mental health, especially the most vulnerable.

A comprehensive outline of the AIP will be uploaded on our school website in due course.

Happy Campers

Our campers returned last Friday after a wonderful three days at Golden Valley Lodge. I received lots of positive feedback from our staff and the camp provider about our students. Apparently our students are amazing, polite and made the most of the opportunities provided to them. AND our students are just delightful!! Even though I already know this, it is wonderful to hear others outside our community recognise our students in such a way.

Thanks to the staff who attended camp; Sandra Pepi, Kellie Banko, Kieran Ryan, Rosa Pantaleo, Daniel Elias, Belinda Slomo and Costa Missailidis, who all gave up time from their home and families so our students could enjoy time away at camp. Well done to our noncampers who had a fun time back at school and thank you to Harriet Dunn for organising the school camp program.

Harmony Day

This week we had a wonderful time celebrating Harmony Day at Moreland PS, by dressing up in orange and holding fun activities during lunch time. Harmony Day is important – a great way to show that we care about everyone in our community. We have students from many different nations around the world at Moreland and it was great to see everyone joining in this wonderful chance to celebrate and embrace our diversity.

The colour of Harmony Day is orange and we saw lots of that colour too! We love the diversity of our community and embrace all the great opportunities this provides to enrich all our lives. Harmony Day is about celebrating our differences and making everyone feel they belong.

Library Resource Centre

We are excited to share our vision around creating a Library Resource Centre at Moreland Primary School.

We have had numerous parents donate lovely books for our upcoming library.  A big thank you to Charles’ family, Tony and Ruth Sidebottom, for their generous donation of new books, from their Book Grocer.  More information regarding the exciting development will follow in upcoming Compass notifications.

Please continue to donate any unwanted books that are in good condition.  Thank you to all the families for their generous donations thus far.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and/or our Library Resource Manager, Helen Brown  helen.brown3@education.vic.gov.au

Happiness Conference

I had the opportunity to attend the Happiness conference last week. It was fun filled, thought provoking and touched on themes such as the kindness, finding meaning in life through reflection and connection, how an appreciation of beauty can enhance our resilience, living with vulnerability, and how to make ‘being human’ easier in tough times.

A key focus was around how to close the gap between our good intentions and our actual behaviour so we can enhance happiness, health and wellbeing for ourselves and others, and help to make the world a better place. This highlights my vision for Moreland PS, whereby our positive education philosophy is all about focusing on student positive behaviours, teaching children about being grateful for what they have, random acts of kindness, being resilient and developing the skills needed by young people worldwide. It's crucial that we provide a critical context in shaping children's self-esteem, self-efficacy and sense of control over their lives.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.” - Jane Goodall

Young Leaders Conference

On Wednesday the leaders of Moreland primary school were given the opportunity to attend a large event called Young leaders Conference. They were entertained by four successful Australians who talked about their childhood goals, setbacks, failures and sacrifices. These people included; Lachie Smart who is the youngest person to fly around the world solo, Guy Edmonds who created the popular Tv show ‘Hardball’ and many other successful books, Cate Campbell who is a four time olympic gold medalist after pursuing her dream to swim for Australia,  and lastly, Damien Fleming who talked about his very successful cricket career and what motivated him to keep going.

The year sixes learnt very valuable lessons from all four of these people and we are sure that they will implement them into their lives. They were all inspired to ‘lead with laughter’, to ‘accept their failures’ and ‘dream big’, because everyone is capable of everything.

Jacob was given the opportunity to ask Guy Edmonds ‘``How he felt when he  finally got his first book published?’ The school captains were also chosen to thank and talk to Cate Campbell on stage. Afterwards, the two students had a conversation with Cate about how weird it felt to hear your voice through the microphone.

All of the leaders were very respectful on the public transport and walking around the city. They appreciated the opportunity very much and thanked  Em and Lisa for taking them. For all the students who came along, it was a great experience to learn and lead that will go down in the history books.

Here are some personal thoughts from our leaders:

Orpheus: It was quite nerve racking and nail biting to talk in front of everyone on the massive stage with Cate Campbell. It was a great experience though, the whole day involved lots of dancing and singing, competitions, challenges and life morals.

Matilda: I had so much fun at the young leaders conference, and learnt so much from four amazing people, but what I really enjoyed the most was being able to go on stage and thank Cate Campbell and even being able to talk to her with a fellow leader. Though it was terrifying, it was amazing experience that I will never forget

Jacob: I especially enjoyed the Young Leaders Conference, but one thing that I really liked is that I got the opportunity to ask Guy Edmons a question on the microphone. I asked him “How did you feel once you had finally gotten a book published?” and if I could get the choice to do it again I would say yes in a heartbeat so I definitely enjoyed my time there.

Abby: I personally enjoyed all of the Young Leader Conference, but one thing that stood out to me was when Lachie Smart spoke to us about him circumnavigating the world in a single engine aeroplane when he was 18, making him the youngest person ever to achieve that incredible feat. I also enjoyed listening to Cate Campell retell her experience with sibling rivalry. Guy Ed

Emma: My favourite part of the Young Leaders Conference was listening to Lachie Smart. It was so inspiring listening to how he got past all the struggles and especially when he flew into Egyptian Airspace and had no communication with the air traffic controllers. It was such a relief when he got through to traffic controllers and was saved from getting shot down.

Elsie: The Young Leaders Conference was one of the most interesting things I have seen. For instance, after each break if you went back into the auditorium 10 minutes early, there would be a dance teacher who would teach you a simple dance, and then there would be some catchy music which makes it really easy to understand the dance moves. My favourite speaker though, was Guy Edmonds. He is a writer/actor/director. A little bit of everything. He was very interesting when explaining his life story.

Claire: My favourite part of the Young Leaders Conference was when we got the opportunity to listen to Lachie Smart, Cate Campbell, Guy Edmonds and Damien Fleming. I really enjoyed the experience of being able to hear them talk about their journeys and if I had the chance I would definitely do it again.

Hilary: I’m not sure what words I would use to describe the Young Leaders Conference. It was an amazing and unique experience that will stay with me for quite a long time. I loved listening to all the different people talk about their experiences. My favourite was listening to Lachie Smart talk about his flight around the world. It was wonderful to hear about his struggles and solutions, his failures and triumphs and the cheese sandwich that made him cry.

In short, the Young Leaders Conference was a very inspiring thing to go to and I certainly enjoyed it.

Lily: The Young Leaders Conference was a great experience to learn about how to be a leader, how to get through the ups and downs, and to hear the amazing and unique stories from four great Australian leaders. My favourite was listening to Cate Campbell and Lachie Smart, because Lachie still went through so many challenges, yet now he’s the youngest person to fly around the world solo. Cate Campbell was fun to listen to as well, because it was interesting to learn about how her career basically started because she was jealous of her younger sister, Bronte. But what planted the cherry on top was the dancing we all got to do before sessions started. If we got into the auditorium 10 minutes early, we had the opportunity to do some dances, where a man named Ezra would teach us some simple and fun moves.  Overall the Young Leaders Conference was a unique and fun experience, and I’m happy to say that it was very enjoyable.
