Teacher - Art

I am consistently delighted with the effort and enthusiasm with which our young art students approach their practical classes.  Always willing to 'give it a go', students are often surprised at the talent they discover, with their art projects becoming an expression of their individuality and personal flair.

In our first semester together,  Year 7 students began their Art classes with a unit on Portraiture, choosing a notable person to reproduce in a grey lead portrait. They learned about facial proportions and how to use tone to create depth in a drawing. The amazing quality of their work prompted us to launch the prestigious Brunsibald Portrait Competition, Semester 1, (in the vein of the much lauded Australian Archibald Prize) and we asked the student audience to vote for their favourite portrait.

The response was remarkable and our student community was clearly impressed with the talent on display. After many, many votes were counted, our winners were crowned. Three special mentions went to Tighe Barber of 7U, Lorena Maxwell of 7U and Carlo Pretty of 7C. These three portraits, whilst not making it to the top three, received a great deal of votes and displayed immense skill.  Our two runners up were Lily Fang of 7S, who drew ‘ScoMo’ and Piea Kelly of 7U who drew Amanda Gorman. Both portraits captured something of the subjects’ personalities and demonstrated a high level of skill.

The winner of our Brunsibald Portrait Competition (Semester 1) was Ruby Ruse of 7U, who drew a stunning portrait of Hagrid, somehow capturing the heart and warmth of this well loved literary figure. Ruby was awarded with a bespoke Brunsibald Trophy and some art materials to further her drawing endeavours. Well done Ruby!
