Level 1

Welcome back to Term 4. We hope all our wonderful families enjoyed the school holidays and that the children are re-energised for a fabulous term ahead!

The last week of Term 3 was a busy one but also a lot of fun! The Billy Cart and Footy Colours Day provided lots of action and was a terrific way to end the term.

During our Reading Workshops at the end of Term 3, we focused on characters and setting. It was fun choosing our favourite characters and explaining to the class why we liked them. We wrote Book Reports, followed instructions to create Magic Monsters and practised tricky spelling words. We are looking forward to continuing with our Reading Comprehension groups this term, reading fiction and non-fiction books and further exploring our reading strategies.

Writing was all about Procedural texts at the end of Term 3, and the children  embraced this genre. We discussed where we might see instructions in our day to day lives – lego, recipes, games. With our peers, we ordered procedures for crossing the road safely and making spaghetti bolognaise. We also had fun creating our own procedures for washing a strange pet, making fruit salad and making fairy bread. Last week, we began a unit of work on Persuasive writing. This involved activities that focused on opinions and understanding that people can have different ideas/opinions/points of view about the one idea.

During Show and Tell last week, the children proudly presented their speeches titled ‘If I had a Superpower…’. This has been a fantastic opportunity to practise voice volume, pace and projection, along with  body language. Congratulations to all the children for trying their best!

During Mathematics, we learnt about the features of a clock, telling the time to the hour and half-hour. We used Time Machine Robots to match analogue and digital times and played Time Bingo to practise recognising times on analogue clock faces. Last week we revised place value, skip counting and number lines.

At the end of Term 3, the children proudly presented their dinosaur dioramas to their classes, discussing the materials they used, the dinosaurs they chose and how they created a suitable habitat. It was a fitting way to end our Inquiry unit ‘Dinosaurs and More’, giving the children the opportunity to explain and share their new ideas and understandings.

Inquiry this term is all about water and we are looking forward to discussing sources of water, who uses water and how it is used, how to use water responsibly and much, much more! Last week, we commenced the unit by gathering the children’s existing knowledge and understanding of water. It was fun using our 5 senses to describe water!

In Term 4, our Wellbeing learning will be taught through the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) curriculum. We are looking forward to continuing on with the invaluable discussions and activities we have already undertaken this year through the Resilience Project.
