Flora & Fauna

Welcome to Term 4 of the Level 3 Flora and Fauna program.

In the first week of the term we began rotation 7 and then we finish off the term with our eighth rotation. Please refer to the schedule below to determine when your child is cooking or gardening (they know which group they are in if you ask them). We welcome our parent/ carer volunteers to assist in the Gallery or the garden – our students love having you there! Please just turn up at 11:30 and sign in at the office (you must have a Working with Children’s Check). We supply the apron for you during cooking.

COOKING: Students are learning how to make oven baked spring rolls in rotation 6 and have been busy learning how to julienne vegetables and wrap them with rice noodles in spring roll wrappers. Of the taste testing we have been lucky enough to engage in, they certainly are yummy! Thank you again to Mrs O’Keefe for creating a student friendly recipe and of course for doing all the shopping and preparation.

GARDENING: Students have been busy tending to our vegetable gardens and many have been lucky enough to ‘pick some veggies’! We have enjoyed seeing them come back to class holding freshly picked beetroot and baby carrots, and hope that they helped you cook them at home.

SUSTAINABILITY: Students are investigating the topic of ‘Caring for Country with Fire’ and we are delighted to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into our Flora and Fauna program. They have been busy exploring the Kulin and Gariwerd calendars of Aboriginal seasons and how these differ to the more familiar seasons of Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. Additionally, students have been learning about how Aboriginal people use fire management to look after the land.

SCIENCE: During rotation 7 students are learning about Australian native animals. They are investigating an animal of their choice by researching details about the animal’s habitat, predators, diet, life span, Aboriginal name and other interesting facts. Their completed report can be located in their Seesaw journal.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support of this wonderful program!
