Queens Jubilee - Avenue of Honour

Earlier this year the school was successful in receiving Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee Grant from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE). The grant was used to plant Quercus trees along the entrance driveway into the school, creating an avenue of honour.

There are several outcomes that Aitken College are required to achieve by undertaking the Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Project:

Create a legacy outcome

Planting an avenue of Quercus trees along the front entrance of the school will create a legacy to recognise the Queen’s service to Australia and the Commonwealth as these trees will live for hundreds of years. Aitken College will also hold a commemorative event later in Term 4.

Environmental outcome

The entrance to Aitken College is a large open landscape that is bare and lacking diversity. Planting large trees will add to this landscape by increasing the area of tree canopy and increasing the biodiversity of the area. This will create a microclimate, such as shade, wind protection and temperature control, providing habitat and food sources for our wildlife in an ever-increasing housing development suburb.

Social and Economic outcome

Creating an avenue of trees will add value and impact to the school particularly when the trees have matured and set it apart from other schools in the area.
