Year 6

Cleaning up the Heritage Garden

Last week the whole school started to plant some season appropriate plants in allocated planter boxes.  The Year 6 S.T.E.M leaders then helped Dave to clean up the area ready for the summer season. Eventually the other Year 6 students and their Buddies joined them as many hands made light work. We look forward to seeing our garden thrive in the coming season !

Year 5

Super Speak Program in Year 5

This term the Year 5 students participated in the Super Speak Program which is a course in public speaking.

The students learned about the use of ‘Expressive Skills’ when speaking in front of an audience including volume, pitch and pace, facial expressions, posture and body language. They then practised these skills when recounting a story about a time they were hurt or embarrassed. The students then learned about the PREP ( Point, Reason, Example, Point) technique which is a short and simple organisational tool to help them present an opinion in a confident and persuasive manner. Their learning was then extended to the structuring and writing of a persuasive speech using the 3 point technique.

In the final session, Year 5 parents were invited to watch their children ‘in action’ and they were amazing!! The children shone, giving us a glimpse of their wonderful ideas and abilities. Needless to say, all those present were very proud.

A huge thank you to Roisin from Super Speak, who did a fabulous job leading and engaging the students as well as teaching them the skills of effective public speaking.

Fantastic effort Year 5! You are all stars.

Reflection Statements

Before Super Speak I used to worry a lot about speaking in front of others. I used to get embarrassed when I forgot my lines and was not good at using expression.

During Super Speak I learned to breathe if I forgot my lines and use lots of  facial expression.

Now I breathe if I forget my lines and have better expression. My favourite part was getting better at my expressions.

During Super Speak I learned to be more confident, stand with confidence, have a good posture, speak louder and how to warm up my voice before I talk.

Now I speak confidently, stand with good posture, speak louder and warm up my voice.

My favourite part was learning new things, doing the warm ups , doing the challenges and making up a story on the spot.

Super Speak has been a fantastic experience and here’s why.

Super Speak has taught me to speak confidently, speak well and be articulate.

It has also taught me how to keep an audience’s attention.

Before Super Speak I used to stand with my arms crossed and mumble my words.

I must have looked pretty awkward in front of an audience. Maybe I still do a little bit, but I will keep practising!!

I really enjoyed Super Speak.

Year 3/4

Biological science

For Inquiry this term, the Year 3 /4 students have been exploring the topic Biological science. Throughout the first few weeks of term, we have been focusing specifically on living and non- living things and how they affect our environment.

The students had an activity where they had to explore the Tilly garden and identify and observe specimens that were living and nonliving. They each had to record their observations in their Explorers Journal.

Here is what 3/4 C found!

Matilda M and Sienna S found a living Fungi! They described it as a tall, pale, white stemmed mushroom with a crusty grey/ brown colour bottom that is classified as a Fungi. We sketched the fungi in our books and we measured that it was around 10cm tall. We found it on the side of the planter box.  It is a living specimen that needs water, sun and soil to live.  We don’t know if it is poisonous or not, so we didn't touch it in case!

Some of the Year 3/ 4 students found a family of Maggots! They described them as pale white, dirty, slimy and scrubby creatures! We found them underneath the logs in the Tilly Garden. When we lifted up the log, the maggots started to wriggle back down into the soil. There were also worms, slugs, ants and slaters under there too. Maggots are living specimens and they need cool, dark places to survive.

Mikayla D found a Slater. She described it as small, black scaled, wriggly and cute. I found Slater hiding near a plant in the soil where it was safe and sound. Slaters are living creatures that bury themselves in the soil and curl up into a ball to protect themselves from predators.

Foundation

Our Tadpoles have grown!

In Foundation we have been learning about frogs and how they grow and change throughout their life cycle. Last term Mrs Nicola brought in tadpoles and we have been patiently watching them grow. They have now all grown their legs and are turning into frogs!
