STUDENT ACTIVITIES

'LITTLE STORIES, BIG IDEAS' WRITING COMPETITION

Congratulations to Isabelle Mitchell 8E for receiving 2nd Prize in the National ‘Little Stories, Big Ideas’ Writing Competition.

Also to Olivia Harrison 8E and Lily Marx 8S for receiving Honourable Mentions.

These students entries were outstanding and showcased their writing abilities using the theme of ‘responsibility’

We congratulate them and all the other MESC students on being risk takers and entering the 'Little Stories, Big Ideas’ competition for the very first time.

Isabelle Mitchell

Every canvas tells a story, whether it's jovial or sorrowful, vivid or dim, each comes with their own line.

Mine is dappled, bold in places while deep in others, strokes of regret in the darkest of reds while content in the brightest of blues.

I hold both the paint and the brush, each mark unique. I grasp in my hands both my future and the future of others, for one stroke could kill a thousand, while another save but one life.

It is my burden, and mine alone. For I am the painter and life is the canvas.

Olivia Souls - "Stolen Souls"

Hate is red, like pulsing crimson blood, laced with the desire to kill.

It tastes like the bitter disappointment of an empty plate, as you slowly starve to death.

It smells like the metallic sulphurous scent that hangs in the air as you re-cock a gun for the second round in a gunfight.

It sounds like final words muttered before the trigger of a gun is mercilessly pulled.

It feels like a raging fire, destructive until extinguished. Or a constant war, between humanity and human nature.

A scar on humanity’s skin.

Lily Marx - “Responsibility”

The windows were dirty and the curtains hung like dark shadows.

The numbing stone floor and the lonely walls, hadn’t seen sunlight in months.

In an empty hall, where memories were made, where once music and parades of people would dance, now hung a bitter feeling.  Tables and chairs, chandeliers and fire places, only held cobwebs now.

Just me and a preacher, with a crown in hand as I sat on a dark piercing throne in a dusty blood red dress.

As the preacher finished preaching, the frigid metal of the crown met my head.

The sinking feeling of responsibility.

Term 2 entries on the theme of ‘Ghost’ are now open.

PERFORMING ARTS DAY

This week Year 7 students attended a Performing Arts Day to successfully show their class plays to fellow students and teachers. All classes put in many weeks of hard work, learning about costume designs, how to use the lighting system, organise sound as well as learning their scripts. All students have done a fantastic job and should be proud of all the wonderful work they have achieved over the weeks.

STEINER STREAM

Students have been delving into the Earth’s Systems, in our Geography unit ‘The Dynamic Earth’ and got up close and personal with some curious seals and dolphins in the marine classroom of Port Phillip Bay. Students are learning first hand about the human impacts on these fragile systems and how with education, careful planning and management we can strike a harmonious balance. The best pic of the day- captured by Mr. Koop.

YEAR 10 - ART AND DESIGN

Year 10 art class had a tea party to celebrate the making of all their beautiful tea pots, mugs, platters etc. I also taught them how to make real tea - not with a terrible tea bag. We are holding an art show early next term so you can all see the fantastic job the students from 8-11 do in art and design.

VCAL CONCRETING PROJECT

Recent storms have resulted in significant damage to an existing walking path adjacent to the college P Block. As part of their PD and WR skills outcomes, four of our VCAL students – Luke Bailey, Saul Akestar, Max Kuhne and Ollie Hoekstra participated in a concreting project during week 3 of term 2.

With the assistance of our VCAL Hands on Support leader (Kevin Martin), these students completed an OH&S analysis of the worksite, demolished the existing path, measured and boxed out a new section, mixed, poured and screed new cement to create the new footpath.

This group of students are to be commended for their hard work, persistence and patience as the new concrete set. The end result looks professional and is a complement to your overall effort.
