Model United Nations

Model United Nations – Ms Fisher reports….

Recently our school was proudly represented by a group of amazing students who volunteered to participate in a Model United Nations Summit. The students gave up many of their lunchtime breaks to work collaboratively in small teams to plan and research their position statements which they presented in front of competing teams from secondary schools in our region.

Our students articulately presented their educated positions on the vital global issue of Climate Change, acting as UN delegates for Costa Rica, Spain and Australia. In the caucus our delegates confidently debated and defended their views while aiming to gain support from other countries.

We were very impressed with how articulately, confidently and passionately our students spoke and how maturely they approached their roles as representatives of their respective countries.

A fantastic effort!

Congratulations to Elsie Barret (7B), Asher Greenblat (7B), Miljia Lin (7B), Leo Clarke (8H), Evan Shields (8B), Alice Jayaweera (8C), Jake Gould (9A), Jamie Katic (9B), Zac Hnatko (9B),  Khai Tschuemperlin (10F) and Sebastian Buley-Delanty (12A).

Thanks also to Mr Coghlan and Ms Mattsson for leading these teams.

Model United Nations

On Friday 20th May, us students from GEC were able to take part in the McKinnon SC Model United Nations. Schools in the area had teams that represented different countries. It was a day full of debating, discussing our country and tackling the issue of climate change which was the topic we explored over the course of the day.

We expressed our country's views and sought the views of other countries while finalising each of our proposed amendments.

A definite highlight of the day was when we entered an unmoderated caucus. This is when delegates walk around the hall and have informal discussions with other delegates. We had the opportunity to have discussions with other countries about their policies and guidelines concerning climate change.

Getting to take part in this model UN was such a great experience as we got to put our debating skills to the test and take on the position of our assigned country. By the end of the day we all made new friends from different schools and got to expand our societal knowledge.
