Glen Eira College Achieves a New Chess Milestone

Glen Eira College has finished in the top three schools in a Chess Victoria interschool tournament for the first time thanks to an inspirational performance from our students in an interschool chess event, which was held at Scotch College on Tuesday 24th May.

Four Glen Eira College teams competed in this event against many of Victoria’s strongest chess schools and top junior chess players.

Despite the formidable opposition, our students played superbly recording an outstanding result. The Glen Eira College A team finished outright third out of 17 competing teams, only 3.5 points behind the first placed team and was awarded the College’s first ever interschool chess trophy. The College’s B, C and D teams were also very competitive and succeeded in outscoring a number of participating teams from other schools.

Ten of our students will represent Glen Eira College in the Chess Victoria Secondary Interschool State Final in October. Whilst several Glen Eira College students can hold their heads high for having achieved pleasing individual results in the tournament, a special mention is due to Pierre Maziarz of Year 10, Nicholas Jiang of Year 8 and Randheer Thogata of Year 7 who all won 5 of their 7 games in a very strong chess event.

A special mention is also due to Mr Eric Bohlen who has given generously of his time to coach students at chess club.

Chess Club meets on Tuesdays at lunchtime in rooms 110 and 111. There is also an after school chess coaching session, which takes place every Tuesday from 3.15pm to 4.30pm in room 8.
