Languages Corner

There has been a lot happening our language classes!

Year 7 Japanese students have been working hard to master the Hiragana using the Hiragana Karate Belt system. Students are enjoying challenging themselves and helping each other each pass the levels. It is wonderful to see them getting stronger and feeling more confident when reading Hiragana. Next term, it will be the turn of the Year 8 students with the Katakana Karate Belts.

Late last term, Year 8 and 9 French Immersion students were able to participate in a one-week reading program using the resources available to them in the library. This involved selecting authentic francophone magazines and reading books with the aim of improving their general literacy skills and cultural understanding. It has also served as a springboard for our current topics relating to Les Misérables (8C) and Molière (9C) and our participation in the Berthe Mouchette competitions.

The Year 7 French Immersion students went to the National Gallery of Victoria. They explored the French artworks and had the opportunity to do a tour focused on ancient history with an educator from the gallery. The highlight of the visit was an 18th century painting depicting a scene between the Egyptian queen Cleopatra and the Roman general Marc-Anthony. It was amazing to see students asking so many questions and making connections with what they are learning in class.
