Hands On Learning

At Swan Hill North Primary School we are excited to share the recommencement of our Hands On Learning (HOL) program.  We are one of the very few schools to offer such a program to primary aged students. Our HOL is based on the program developed and supported by Hands On Learning Australia (HOLA).  HOLA is  ‘committed to preventing the harm of early school leaving’.

At Swan Hill North Primary School our HOL Program provides the opportunity for some of our students to form relationships with mentors outside of the classroom setting, to encourage school engagement, achievement and self confidence as well as developing practical skills. Practical skills, such as painting, minor construction, gardening, general maintenance and repairs to school grounds and facilities, are taught. We have also joined with OzHarvest to help educate our students in the program about food, food waste and conscious cooking.

Hands on Learning sessions are conducted every Thursday with our wonderful maintenance hero Scotty, Erin our Chaplain and Mrs Lloyd our Mental Health and Wellbeing Co-ordinator.

Our most recent project has been the construction of the flower beds at the entrance of our school, including the irrigation piping for watering and planting.

This project has been funded through the School Focused Youth Service and the Northern District Community Health.
