Book Week Dress up

Well at last the long awaited ‘Book Week’ celebrations are upon us! Due to a rush of concerts, residential camps, athletics and breast cancer awareness ‘tutu day’ fundraiser, (Wow what a term!), we had to delay our day celebrating books until Wednesday 19th September.

The theme for the Children’s Book Council of Australia is ‘Find Your Treasure’. The focus is on BOOKS. Whilst your children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character or indeed a pirate, Ormond PS really wants to focus on the wonder of books for learning and transporting our children away to other realms as they become lost in a good book. The dress up is fun but please don’t feel pressured to push out all the stops. lt might simply be a ‘prop’ that is well known to the character. We’ll certainly be encouraging the children not to lose sight of the real meaning of ‘Book Week’. There will be a parade in the school hall at 10.15am.

In the true spirit of the power of reading with our children, if you haven’t yet seen “Scottish Grandma reading Winky Wonky Donkey” on YouTube, do so! Remember…….Books arrggh the treasure!

Ormond PS DVD Cover Design Competition

Calling all creatives! We are looking for an awesome DVD cover design to showcase ‘The Ormond DVD’. The Ormond DVD is a multimedia spectacular showcasing fun and learning had at Ormond each year.

The winning entry will have their picture digitalised and used as the front cover of this year’s DVD with their name printed alongside it.

To enter draw your design on an A4 piece of paper (folded length-ways) and hand it to your teacher, or, to one of the grade 6 Arts captains Benji  or Lani.

You can create a picture however you like. Use pencils, crayons or even create a computer generated image.

Entries must be in by Friday the 12th of October (The end of the first week of term 4). Winners will be announced the following week.

Foundation News

Each week in Foundation we have a ‘word of the week’. The emphasis is on teaching the sound-letter relationships in the word (phonics). This fortnight the words are wheel and queen, with a focus on the consonant digraphs wh and qu, as well as the vowel digraph ee. The word of the week is also incorporated into a weekly sentence along with common words (high frequency words). We practise the new words and common words 3-5 minutes each day.

When your child is learning their Magic words, a fun way to remember the words could be to write each word down in different colours, rainbow colours or creative letters. We would love to see how creative the children can be with the writing of their Magic words.

In Mathematics, we are learning about the passing of time over an hour, day and a week. We will be looking at basic analogue and matching digital times. We will familiarise ourselves with coins and notes, by tracing over coins, colouring money and playing shops!

As part of the Humanities program, we continued investigating the best shaped and sized objects to roll and bounce. In Science, we are preparing for our excursion to Cranbourne Gardens next Tuesday. The current focus is on living and non-living things, the needs of living things and why humans need plants.

Please enjoy some photos from the recent physical sciences rolling and bouncing unit.

Have a wonderful last fortnight of the term, from the Foundation team!

Year 1 & 2 Concert News

The Year 1 and 2 students and teachers would like to thank everyone who attended their soiree, ‘Friendship is…’ last Wednesday night. The students’ hard work paid off as they performed incredibly well on the night.

We would like to especially thank Jess Dixon, 2B’s student teacher for editing and controlling our music on the night. Charli  and Alice from 6A were kind enough to offer their choreography skills, which we thank them for. Finally we would like to once again, thank the families for coming on the night, organising costumes for the children and for inevitably learning all of the words to our songs whilst your children practiced at home!

Year 4 News

Year 4 students have been working on their Genius Hour Projects for a few weeks now. They are becoming experts on a topic they are interested in.

Students recently got together to share with each other what they are researching and to provide feedback to their peers on their progress so far. Most students are now putting the final touches to their projects and will be preparing to showcase their work in the final week of Term 3.

Year 5/6 Movie Night

“3…...2…….1…..0!” Everyone shouted as the movie was starting. The Ormond Oscars was to showcase our special movie animations and music videos to our parents, siblings and special friends. The Ormond Oscars was a blast and this year it was even better. We got popcorn and there were paparazzi stars everywhere, heaps of decorations and even a red carpet which one of the parents brought in. It was a fun night hanging out in the atrium in fancy clothes, eating popcorn and some of us taking selfies with the massive Oscars frame before the movie started. While the movies were running, many parents were impressed by our work and most of the parents were laughing because the movies were funny. Each movie had good entertainment and told a story. We also showed what it was like behind the scenes. I definitely enjoyed myself at the Ormond Oscars and I hope they do something like that in high school.

Artist in Residence

Our sessions with Jane Byrne for the Clay Incursions have finally been completed. Grade 3 have created some wonderful creatures in their session, whilst exploring how to create a thumb-pot and add textured features to their work.  The grade 4s have starting glazing their ceramic birds and are looking forward to seeing how the colours change once they have been through the firing process.  Our Kiln has been getting a thorough work out and will continue to, over the next term.  The students and I are quite excited to see how each piece turns out after each firing.

MOMA at the nation gallery - Part 2

Continuing on from last newsletter, below are some of the reflections written by the Year 6 students.

"We rode the train to the NGV. The artworks we saw were by Frida Kahlo, van Gogh, Salvador Dali and that is just some of the amazing artists we saw. The MoMA exhibition was a great experience and I would like to go there again." -    Joo

"MoMA was a very exciting experience which let us explore modern art for the first time in Australia. My favourite piece of art was the white and beige stripy painting." -   Adam

"The MoMA art exhibition was a great experience because you could soak in all the wonderful artworks and sculptures made by popular and creative artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh."   Toby

"The MoMA exhibition was awesome! It was full of culture and colour and every piece of art had expression, even the blank canvases selling for thousands of dollars. All in all, the day was great and to experience the original art in person was even more incredible."  -  Grace

"MoMA was full of wonderful, colour explosions, with each painting having a unique back-story. The year 5 & 6 students got to experience this having a lecture on multiple famous paintings by some artists like Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. We all had a great experience learning lots."  -  Hannah

"The MoMA exhibition was fantastic. It was so amazing seeing all of the modern artwork. Also thinking and guessing what the painting means.  The Space Invaders and The Emojis were so cool because they were so creative and it was made by a Japanese artist."  - Maiko

"At MoMA In liked seeing the stained glass ceiling inside the gallery, the swinging fan and The Postman portrait by van Gogh. The garden was particularly well set out. But best of all, I liked The Space Invaders Game." -  Jason

"I really enjoyed the MoMA exhibition because of all the art I saw. I liked how every artist had their own style of painting. My favourite artist was Andy Warhol because of the bright colours he used." - Sarvine

"I really enjoyed the exhibition and my favourite type of art was surrealism and sculpture. I liked the Surrealist pieces because it mixed reality with dreams and beliefs which made them really interesting to look at. I liked the sculptures because they were sometimes random but always interesting. " - Jasper

"I liked how at MoMA there was an interactive game to play (Space Invaders). Next time I would have change how long the introductory talk was (if I could)." -   Tali
