The senior Student Leaders Dinner was held on Wednesday 24/2 with all leaders able to attend with a parent or guardian, House Leaders and members of the College Executive also there to enjoy the evening with them. This was a chance for the Student Leaders to showcase their vision for 2021 and what they will be looking to achieve through the support of the new Student Representative Council (SRC). They worked with Jeremy and Karlows from the African Youth Alliance (AYA) on their leadership skills and values in the afternoon and created a Powerpoint presentation for the evening. This was also an opportunity for our young leaders to speak in front of Gabrielle Williams who is the local member for Dandenong and a great supporter of the College and student voice.

Jeremy and Kalows have been doing work with our Student Leaders for a number of years and as past students of St Johns are very familiar with our school and school community and welcome the opportunity to ‘give back’ and to develop young people as future community leaders. They will continue to work with the leaders, the SRC and different year levels over the course of the year on Leadership Skills.

As an SRC we have come together as a group twice, once over TEAMS during the COVID lockdown and then with a ZOOM meeting with AYA. We are looking to hold our meetings in period 4 of Monday A at least 2 or 3 times per term to discuss relevant events and also issues raised by students. The House Forums that play an important part in the SRC formation will also begin being held with House Captains and House SRC representatives seeking information and feedback on issues. The House Captains did a wonderful job during our Aquatics Carnival and are now working on ideas for Harmony Day.

We are sending members of our SRC from years 9 and 10 to a Student Leaders Forum run by the City of Greater Dandenong on the 16/3 and I look forward to the ideas and initiatives they bring back, a special thank you to Ms Kintzel for offering to take them and supervise.

Finally we will look to send out Student Surveys on Wellbeing and Academic issues that we will ask students to complete so that the SRC can review the data and answers and look at ways we can improve wellbeing and academic outcomes from the point of view of our students. This ‘student voice’ is a key part of the SRC and our change to the new more inclusive model.
