The Human Library

BY CALEB LOBBE (SENIOR SPORTS COORDINATOR)

There is a heart warming movement that originated from Denmark, where instead of borrowing a book from a library visit, you borrow a human.

The idea was established in 2000, and is designed to ‘publish people as open books’, providing a person with an opportunity to ask questions of someone's life and experience in a deliberate and safe context.

This concept provides a fantastic way for people to broaden the lens of their worldview, and potentially opens up ways for individuals to understand some of life’s issues better.

Perhaps of most importance, is the notion that the Human Library provides a significant way for humans to feel valued by others. This is achieved through the simple act of others actively making the effort to give people their time to listen to their own personal life story.

In the Bible, one of God's greatest commandments is to -

‘love your neighbour as yourself’ (Mar 12:31).

One of the best ways we can do this, is by taking the time to listen to those around us, and to make the effort to seek to understand and be open to the unique life story of others, even if it differs significantly to what we are normally exposed to.

May you have a blessed week!
