Hello from the Meerkats!

The Meerkats have had a wonderful start to Term 3!

In English, we are learning how to write a biography. Students this term will be involved in comprehensive research. They will choose a notable person in Australian History and facilitate skills of independent learning as well as higher level thinking skills, time management and organisational skills. In class, through shared reading, we are looking at the life of Anh Do, reading and exploring language features through his very own book, The Little Refugee. This term, we have thoroughly enjoyed reading our new class novel 'Boy Overboard' by Morris Gleitzman depicting an exceptional story; a book that brings together soccer, bread, the horror of living under an authoritarian regime, the importance of education and a side of humour.

In Maths, students are becoming skilled mathematicians using multiple strategies to prove how they solve problems and choosing the best strategy that works for them.

It is wonderful to see students taking ownership over a certain way to solve a problem. The Meerkats enjoy playing class games and practising their multiplication facts. Their favourite one at the moment is "I have ? Who has the product of ? Be sure to ask your children about it.

In History, we are learning about how Australia became a Nation. Students will explore the factors that led to Federation and experiences of democracy and citizenship over time. They will also learn about the significance of Australia’s British heritage, the Westminster system and other models that influenced the development of Australia’s system of government. Students learn about the way of life of people who migrated to Australia and their contributions to Australia’s economic and social development.

In Science with Mr Young, students are exploring Physical World. They will be learning about how electrical energy controls movement in systems and how energy is transformed from one form to another. TheThis unit of .work will be complemented by the Science excursion to the Illawarra Educational Centre on Friday 19 August. Also, students will be sharpening their technology using google documents as well as typing.

We are looking forward to another fantastic term packed with new learning opportunities!
