ROAD SAFETY

An important safety reminder to our BSC Community,
Road trauma is the biggest killer of children 1-14 years old in Australia.
The more and more we can remember to take care and be AWARE of our movements on and around the road, the better.
As pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, we all have a large responsibility to take care on and around our roads.
Student drop off and pick up is a busy time but we all owe it to our safety to slow down, look both left and right, and take good care!
This week, we had yet another concerned local citizen come to alert us that our BSC students were walking in a group, nonchalantly, without any concern for the lights. They crossed the road whilst oncoming traffic which had a green light were driving towards them. Thankfully a man driving had noticed this and had stopped driving midway in the road, otherwise the ending could have been a very different story.
Please we urge all parents and students reading this to take more care and sit and talk with their young people about the real importance of road safety. A second glance can be the difference between life and death ultimately.
And this also applies to the cyclists to and from school. Please put your helmets on. I can’t tell you how many times I think to myself ‘the helmet won’t help the cyclist if they are hit or fall, while it’s dangling on the handlebars, or unclipped on their head.’
It IS cool to take care of yourself.
I will never forget personally, the story of a friend at my school who was hit while riding his bicycle just out the front of our school. He was thrown from his bike and the Ambulance Crew that came said that despite his serious leg injury, he would be ok in time, and the only thing that saved his life from a head trauma and possible life threatening disaster was the fact that he was wearing his helmet secured and correctly. I have remembered this story and these scenes ever since.
Please don’t let your attention or your safety slip for the sake of a clip on your helmet, or for the sake of reading a text message whilst walking across a busy road as a pedestrian.
Some Reminders:
- Don’t read or look at your phone while crossing the roads.
- Pay attention to safety and road signals.
- Wear your bike helmet on your head, secured correctly.
- Slow down and in all cases, be more careful on or around the roads.
- Look left, look right, and look left again before crossing.
It really is very simple. ‘Stay safe, stay alive.’ That was the campaign message when I was at school. And it still applies in the most simplistic of forms now.
Wishing you all safety and good health.
