Families with Year 2 Students - BYOD Program Years 3-6

The Teesdale Primary School BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Program has been a fantastic initiative for students in Grades 3-6 for the past few years. Next year, it will be your child’s turn to begin the program as they enter Grade 3. In order to prepare for this, I have created an information presentation outlining the program and what steps families need to take to be ready for next year. These details have also been sent directly to you via Sentral. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via Sentral.

Foundation News!

Last week the Foundation students worked really hard to produce their first narrative.  They were guided through the process of creating a character, setting, complication and resolution.  Here is a snap shot of a few of them below!  Be sure to look out for your child’s narrative as they have been typed up and will be sent home this week!  We are extremely proud of all student efforts and imagination.

Poppy the Caterpillar

By Zara C

Once upon a time there lived a caterpillar and his name was Poppy.  He had a shelter and his shelter was a big leaf on him.

One day he moved on a power line and there was thunder and lightning.  He got zapped “oh no”.  One of his tentacles was broken.

He moved into the old ladies house and the old lady glued his tentacles back to his head.

He moved back to his house and he went to the beach with the old lady.  They played beach ball.  They went under the sea.  They got stuck and the old lady freed them.

Year 1 and 2 News

Reading:

In Reading, students have started each lesson with a range of phonemic awareness activities. Students are developing a range of skills including recognising the phonemes in words, identifying rhyme and isolating the beginning, medial or end sounds in words. One of their favourite tasks is to substitute or change the beginning sound of a word to make a new word. Here is an example.

‘mail… Change /m/ to /s/ and the word is… sail!

Try this one at home.

‘Side… change /s/ to /r/ and the word is…

Can you think of your own example?

Writing:

In Writing, students have been learning how to write persuasively. This week students were given the topic ‘City or Country?’ and asked their teacher which would be the better place to live. Students did a fantastic job completing this task independently, detailing reasons and evidence for a particular setting.

Here is a sample of some of student’s persuasive arguments:

The country is better than the city because you can have a bigger property and house’’ - Sophie

Lastly, you can have more animals in the country. The city is really crowded, so you can’t have as many animals. Wouldn’t you like to have more pets?”

  • Tia

Firstly, I believe you should live in the country because it is peaceful. It is quiet because there is very little traffic”.

  • Sam

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, students have been learning about money. They are learning to identify Australian coins by their features such as colour, numbers and the animals on them and to understand their worth by ordering the coins according to value. Yesterday, students made rubbings of plastic coins and labeled them with their features.
