Wellbeing Focus - Netflix and Squid Game

The buzz has finally returned to St Louis in the last couple of weeks. It's been great to see how our children have embraced each other as they finally catch a glimpse of their friends, as well as listen to the conversations which are filling the previously empty corridors in and around the school.

One topic of conversation we have encountered on numerous occassions has revolved around the current Netflix phenomenom of 'Squid Game'. Only yesterday, I was heading out to the playground when I overheard a few of our year 2 students talking about which of the 'games' from the show were their favourite. Was it 'Red Light, Green Light'? Or maybe the 'Marble Game?'

For those who aren't aware, Squid Game is a South Korean show which has taken the world by storm. It has been regularly referred to as most the popular show on Netflix, toppping the charts in multiple countries, and for some, even named as the saviour of this streaming platform.

It aims to replicate a series of childhood, playground games, with the ultimate consequence for those who fail or lose ending in increasingly graphic deaths.

Many of the themes and graphic violence contained within this show are speciafically created for an older audience, hence it's classification as MA15+.

We wanted to share an excellent article on Squid Game  which provides more insight into the series, as well as giving the reader actionable steps parents can take on streaming services such as Netflix to protect their children from seeing this type of content.
