Xenica Community Report

Term 3, 2022

Dear Families,

The Xenica teachers would like to thank all of the families for their ongoing support towards the students . We have had an amazing start to Term 3, and we are very excited to share with you our learning this month.

Reading

In Reading, students have been working on exploring different persuasive texts and their purpose. They have been exploring different types of persuasive texts such as advertisements and picture story books. Students have developed an understanding of how persuasive texts are structured by identifying the different parts of the text. They have been able to identify that authors include how they feel about the topic and support their opinion by including reasons for their opinion. Students explored how authors try to convince their audience by using strong language  such as strongly believe, will, can’t and wouldn’t.

Writing

During Term 3, students have been working on writing a persuasive piece. They were able to use their understanding of the structure of a persuasive piece and apply it in their own writing. Students read the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ and wrote a letter to convince the crayon to come back by developing reasons for their opinion and responding to the letter that crayon wrote. Students developed their understanding by using strong words in their writing to make their piece more convincing. Students also created their own advertisements to sell an item and used descriptive language to convince their audience to buy their product.

Maths

In Maths, students have been working on the concept of multiplication and division. This has been a new challenging concept for the students. Students have done a fabulous job with focusing on using different strategies to work out the problem.  Students have explored the different strategies such as; arrays, groups of, and using number lines.

SEL

In Social and Emotional, learning students have been learning about caring for yourself. This included how to deal with our emotions and what to do when we are feeling these different types of emotions. Students have particularly explored the concept of anger. They have talked about what to do when we are angry and how to express their anger in order to find ways to calm down.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the students have been learning about water. Students had a Yarra Valley Water visit to explore the concept of; where water comes from, the water cycle and saving water. Students learnt that they must conserve water by turning off taps, making sure they use water bottles, and washing clothes when there is a full load. It was a fun session and the students enjoyed expanding their knowledge.
