Achilles Community Report

Term 3, 2022

Welcome to The Achilles Community Newsletter, we have successfully got back into the school routine. The Parent-Teacher-Interviews were a great success, thank you to those parents who came to appreciate the immense progress of their child/children. We are now at the stage of which children have gained a sense of schedule and have now fully adapted to the ways of primary school. We have also seen substantial progress in most of the children at all areas of the curriculum.

Reading

In Reading, we have started to explain the components of a narrative. We have seen marginal success as they are able to recognise the process and structure of a narrative and are building on that notion furthermore. Each week, we are focusing on a distinguished big-book and are together breaking down the structure of that book and categorising things like characters, setting, complication and resolution. Children are allocated a reading level and chosen books categorised into their reading group to break the plot of the story down and identify key structure of the book. We will continue to form on the understanding of narratives for another week then we will focus on retelling a story.

Writing

We are presently working on CVC words; children are proving to be able to segment sounds and write CVC words. We have commenced teaching students to create sentences and children are now learning how to create a sentence structure (capitalisation, spacing, and punctuation). Our focus is writing narratives and have linked components of reading into writing. The process that your child/children are partaking in includes them drawing a picture expressing a setting, character/s, and themes, they will then incorporate a handful of sentences to describe their drawing. Students have understood the sections of a narrative and the sub sections of those sections.

Maths

We are currently working on before-after numbers. To expand, the before-after numbers unit is explaining to students which number comes before and after a certain number. Along with before-after numbers, we have freshly started the concept of ordinal numbers, ordinal numbers are numbers designated by a certain object in a particular order (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 52nd). We have just had a couple session on this concept, and it will take its time before the children understand this concept in their best of abilities. We have also incorporated capacity. (How much liquid a container can hold). We did organise a practical investigation for this unit and took out numerous jugs, containers, and cups and filled them up to discover their capacity. We are also teaching students to use words empty, full, half. From Week 4, we are going to start teaching about weight and are going to focus on the terms ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’. We expect to spend around 3 weeks on this topic and are going to hold a practical investigation. This will incorporate the students to make their own scale and compare the weights of different items and the amount of them too.

100 days of Prep / Pyjama Day

We have reached a great and acknowledgeable milestone. The Friday of Week 3 happened to be the 100th day of prep for the students. We bookmarked this day by doing many activities such as watching movies, making books, doing 100 exercises and painting. We ended the day with a disco accompanied by Luna community. A memorable day for all of us!
