In Our Communities...
Luna & Argus Communities (Preps)
Lunar and Argus have spent this term working on a collaged piece, inspired by the book, ‘Who Saw Turtle’. This is a favourite, that students in prep complete every year. During their first week back, they experimented with various shades of blue acrylic paints and a sponge to create their own ocean backdrop. Students then learnt to draw a turtle, which they collaged onto their ocean background and then used paint pens to draw other creatures from the ocean onto their work. This week they will begin to make their own colourful turtle sculptures from modelling foam.
Argus, Xenica & Ulysses Communities (Year 1&2)
Those monsters that the Year 1&2’s began piecing together last term are close to completion! Most students have completed their Paper Mache layers (a long process) and were pleased with how strong this has left their sculptures. They have added a base layer of paint to the creation, thinking back to their designs and choosing a colour to represent an emotion. The last and final step has been to add facial features and texture to the monsters to give them more character. We look forward to displaying more finished pieces in the next newsletter!
Apollo & Icarus Communities (Year 3&4)
Apollo & Icarus students have continued working on their magiclay sculptures. They finished their armatures last term, with foil and tape and began adding a layer of Paper Magiclay. Magiclay is a white putty like clay that students can manipulate into a character. Their characters have been based on aliens which they have gone through the design process and are now up to their finishing touches of painting their sculptures based on their drawn design.
Icarus & Apollo have been proud to present their completed sculputures and are keen to take them home to display!
Monarch Community (Year 5&6)
The Monarch Community have been working on different activities and will switch throughout the term.
Students of 5&6 A, B and E have been working on a special print-making Lino activity. They have come up with their own design based around nature, after viewing a number of prints created by Maori artists. They noticed the different materials prints could be carved into and how the design could be repeated with different colours. Students are currently working on carving into a round 10cm Lino piece with a sharp tool, that they have been learning to use safely. The process is challenging, and not always turning out as expected, but they are all keen to finish and test out their work! They've also been practising describing their art in pairs, so that each person can draw another person's picture without looking at it. It's a tricky task that students are improving with practice as they learn to use more words and directions to describe artworks to each other.
In 5&6 C and D students have been working on designing a tiki clay sculpture. Tiki sculptures are used to guard the entrances to places considered tapu (sacred) or to protect places. Students have created some amazing designs and are now in the process of making their sculptures. They are using techniques like cross-hatching on the clay to add pieces and body parts on. In their next steps they will paint the tikis once they have dried.
