MATCH REPORT - SOUTHPORT DISTRICT AFL GALA DAY

Friday 17th of June, the weather was crisp and sunny, which made perfect conditions to play footy. Our 2 SMPPS AFL mixed teams were ready for their first match at the Southport District AFL Gala Day. Both teams had 7 matches to play against other schools in the district and were super keen to get started. Our teams played with the true SMPPS spirit of being leaders and playing as a Team. The message was clear from Coach Franzoni ‘Try your best and play as a Team’ and this is exactly what they did for her. Coach Sweeney was all over positioning his players and working their strengths and leading them to many victories. Our number 1 umpire of the day was Nathaniel, he umpired many difficult games and supported students to play fair and learn from the game. There were many great moments but some special mentions go to:

SMPPS Team 1:

  • Ginger, Tex and Rupert rotated through the ruck and all gave a massive effort.
  • Minh Anh who selflessly volunteered for the other team and showed her great sportspersonship when they had less players.
  • Tom A was the most dependable player in any position he played. You could almost be sure that Tom would be there to mark any ball coming into his zone.
  • The growth in Leilia’s confidence as the games went on and she found herself working hard and getting into position to support her team.
  • Tom B showed his persistence and 'never give up' spirit, and he played his position well till the very last game.
  • Jaden used his quick feet and agility to get around the defenders and snapped a great goal.
  • Tex took control of the midfield and created a clear passage through the wing as he set up many goals.
  • Rupert covered a lot of ground with his speed and showed his knowledge of the game with his perfect positioning.
  • William H-K played with a beaming smile from ear to ear and even bagged a few great goals.
  • Ginger was determined not to let her opponents get away with an easy kick. She did everything she could to stop them from scoring.
  • Cash was great in the forward line with linking play, great passing and creating lots of goals. Also, a great support to his team when he was unable to play.
  • Ziggy was amazing at being a team player because he would often play positions that others didn’t want to and he also was great with defending and putting pressure on his opponents.

SMPPS Team 2:

  • Paul Hector was a solid keeper of the ball, creating a brick wall in defence as nothing could get passed him.
  • Eamon’s quick hands, speed and agility was an asset to the team, in every position he played.
  • Anthony was another dependable member of the team. Giving it his all whenever the ball was in his area.
  • Gael the pocket rocket was a force to be reckoned with, as he got around his opponents creating and kicking many goals.
  • Georgia was relentless in standing her ground and not letting any ball past her.
  • Taimane played as a team and supported her zone by getting many touches.
  • Bronte worked the midfield beautifully as he ducked and weaved around his taller opponents. It was hard to hold him back from his signature move of scoring from the midfield.
  • Aki another great team player wrapped up multiple disposals and showed his older opponents how its done.
  • Will L used his fancy soccer skills to get some good passes and goals.
  • Tavi’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed as she ran her heart out to get to each ball.
  • Henry was a solid defender and did his job with pride.
  • Ryan worked hard in all zones giving some good passes and setting up some great goals.
  • Cedric played selflessly and showed his team spirit by passing the ball to his teammates to score when he could have easily taken the glory himself.

It was lovely to see parents join us and support from the sidelines. Congratulations to Rupert and Cedric for taking out the Good Sportspersonships Awards for our school.
