Year 7 Museum Excursion

Year 7 Museum Excursion

Students were excited to see and hear about all the artifacts from Ancient Greece, learn more about our Ancient Past through all our senses hearing from firsthand accounts from Frist Nations people, be guided through time and our history.  Discovering how artifacts were used and having a go themselves, comparing their lives to the lives of past generations, it was a fun interesting learning experience for all involved.

Throughout week 5, Year 7 students travelled with their teachers to the Melbourne Museum by train.

Our visit included visits to the Ancient Greek ‘Open Horizions’ and the Australian First People’s exhibits.

In the Greek exhibit we witnessed some ancient treasures including a golden signet ring from the late bronze age, more than 3000 years old! It was also fascinating to see that the noses of many statues had been removed. We found that this was partly to destroy the spirits believed to ‘live’ inside. We also had the opportunity to see how Greek mythology was depicted on historic artefacts which we had investigated in our last assessment task.

The First People’s exhibit taught us about culture and life for Indigenous Australians. Some of the highlights of this opportunity was to learn about Bungil the Eagle, the creator spirit and Waa the Crow, the people’s protector. It was also interesting to learn that there were over 40 different languages spoken in Victoria and more than 200 nations in the area we now call Australia. A particularly engaging part of this exhibit was a moving sculpture of Bungil the Eagle telling us about Indigenous Australian Lore.

It was great to spend some time away from the classroom with our classmates having fun.

As well as witnessing artefacts and primary source material first hand
