Economics Debate

On Sunday 21st of May, Elley Steenhuizen 12I, Jackson Smith 11F & Alyssa Solidaga 11F, took part in an Economics debate at Fintona Girls school. The debate topics were: ‘The Government should focus on returning the budget to surplus’, for which we were the negative team, and ‘That the official target cash rate has been set too low’ which we had to argue the affirmative.

The topics were provided two weeks before the event and, as seems typical with any planned event this year, illness plagued our preparation time. Despite this the students were able to develop a strong understanding of the topics and were extremely unfortunate on the day not to come away with a win, going down by 1 point in each of their debates.

It was a fantastic opportunity to increase students experience of real-world economics, gaining an understanding of Government and RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) policies and how their decisions impact on society. It was remarkable to see students passionately argue topics they knew little of going into the debate.

I want to congratulate the students for stepping outside their comfort zone and embracing, what I consider to be, the harder sides of the debate; showing resilience and relishing the opportunity to further their economic learning journey. I look forward to hearing them give their budget speeches in parliament in the future!

Victorian All State Jazz Festival

What a whirlwind term it has been! We have been quite busy down here in the music department this term, with performances at Victorian All State Jazz Festival, a Jazz Night and Junior Concert in the same week, and our Senior Concert just last night! Students and parents alike have all been very excited to get back to live performances, with all our concerts pretty much selling out. If you see any of your students over the next week who are involved in music, please be sure to congratulate them on their efforts this term!

Finally, we have some particularly good news to share. This year's Generations In Jazz contest was a hybrid one, with all school submitting video recordings of themselves, which we were able to do with the help of our resident tech wizard Corey Lucas-Evans. Last night was the live GIJ gala concert, broadcast from Mt Gambier, during which they also announced all the various section winners and place getters.

So, it is with great pleasure that we can announce that both Intermediate Stage Band and Senior Choir achieved 2nd place in their respective divisions! If you know any students in these ensembles, be sure to give them a particularly hearty congratulations! After two years of lockdowns and remote rehearsals/performances, this is a great achievement for our students and the school music program. Thanks again to Corey Lucas-Evans for his wizardry in filming/recording our performances, to Janine Pero for her unwavering leadership of the program (even in adversity), and to all our classroom and instrumental music teachers for their continued commitment and perseverance!

Stay safe, and have a wonderful weekend, all!
