Student Learning

PE with Miss A - Invasion Sports

Invasion sports involve an offensive team working to maintain possession of an object while attacking (or invading) a defensive team's goal or target area. Development of specific skills and skill combinations that involve passing, receiving, shooting, and defending were the learning intentions, as well as being able to transfer skills from one sport to another. Students from year 4-6 took part in a 10 week invasion sport unit. This involved a SEPEP (student centred physical education program) basketball tournament for 5 weeks, and then 5 weeks of learning different invasion sports. Weeks 1-4 of the basketball SEPEP were focused on students developing the skills, rules and tactics needed to run their own tournament which took place in week 11 of term 1. The other invasion sports we worked on were soccer, European handball, AFL, hockey and ultimate frisbee. Students had the opportunity to try out many unfamiliar sports and challenge themselves with new fundamental movement skills.

Road Safety in P6

P6 have been discussing and contributing ideas on how we can stay safe. As part of this learning, P6 and other reception classes took part in a Keeping Safe On The Road - Road Safety Session with the SA Police. It was a wonderful opportunity for children to meet a very informative policeman, have a hands-on experience and relevant follow up lessons.

The session provided education on pedestrian and cycle safety and they were introduced to Jeff the Road Safety Dog. During the session students focused on:

  • safe places to play
  • how to cross the road safely
  • passenger safety
  • bike safety
  • public transport safety
  • what is a triple zero emergency.
