Junior School update

Vicky Gemmell and Jacqui Sidaway

Welcome back!

It feels like Term 3 is well underway and after only one short week back, the students have returned to learning with alacrity. However, before we move on from Term 2 completely, there are a couple of things to follow up.

Lloyd victorious

On Wednesday 15 June, we had the Junior School Athletics Carnival. Everyone participated in a range of events to get their house points including long jump, hurdles, 100m, 200m sprints, 800m and vortex. Despite the horrible weather, everyone had fun and tried their best. The favourite event of most Year 6 students was the 200m sprints but there were many other events that were fun to participate in. During assembly on Friday, the long-awaited news was announced that Lloyd had won. Unfortunately, Lloyd’s House Captain, Eloise B, was not able to be there but she was overjoyed to hear about Lloyd's victory. Congratulations to everyone who participated on this day!

Semester 1 Values awards

All Junior School teaching staff nominate students who consistently display these values for an end of semester award. Certificates are presented to four students at the final assembly of each semester.

Congratulations to the following girls for demonstrating the school values in Semester 1.

Respect: Eden S (Year 5)

Integrity: Ellie C (Year 1)

Passion: Alice Y (Year 2)

Creativity: Ariana F (Year 4)

Walk-a-thon follow-up

Following on from our inaugural and successful Junior School Walk-a-thon, we are thrilled with the efforts of our top individual fundraisers, Angela Y (Year 2) and Clementine D (Year 5), who will be offered the opportunity to invite a friend to share a morning tea with the Heads of Junior School. We congratulate all those who participated. Here is a breakdown of the fundraising per year level:

As you will clearly see, the winning class is Year 5A, who will be offered a movie afternoon soon to celebrate their sterling efforts.

Service Learning: Solar Buddy

To kick off Term 3, Solar Buddies was a fun service activity that the Year 6’s participated in. It was about making solar lights for students in need. These children live all over the world and are suffering from energy poverty. We made these lights in partners to help them with their education. They can use the lights to travel to school when it is dark, and they can use them to study at night. It was a great challenge to put the lights together! We also had the chance to write a friendly note to the student who would receive their light. We all really enjoyed it and hope we made an impact to their lives!

MS Readathon

Junior School students are invited to participate in the upcoming MS Readathon. The MS Readathon has been igniting a passion for reading in children, all while helping people with Multiple Sclerosis. The rules are simple: read whatever you like, as much as you can, throughout the month of August. An email will be sent to parents to register their child. Homeroom teachers will encourage students to participate, although it is not compulsory.

Bebras 2022

Bebras is an international initiative promoting Informatics and Computational Thinking among students. The second round of the 2022 Challenge begins in August. This is an optional competition that students from Years 3 to 6 may register for. For further information, register your daughter here.

Science Talent Search

This year's theme is Glass: More than meets the eye. Alex C in Year 4 and Olivia B in Year 5 submitted two very different but wonderful projects. These students worked diligently to complete their projects and we are proud of their efforts. Olivia created a beautiful picture book titled I am a glassmaker and you may read it here. Alex took part in the experimental research division and investigated the effect of coloured glass on our eyesight. You can read her report here. We wish both students best of luck for the competition.
