Principal's Report

Dear families,

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope you had a lovely holiday and spent quality time with your family and friends.

I am very excited to start this term with the knowledge that our school community is starting to attend more school events. Thank you for all of our families who attended our Project Based Culminating events towards the end of last term. We held the various culminating events to celebrate all of the learning that has transpired for our students over the course of the semester. Our Semester 2 Culminating Events will be conducted towards the end of Term 4.

We invite families to our Community Engagement evening on the 24th of August. Please pencil this date in your diaries as we will be discussing your child’s learning goals with you. The meeting afternoon starts at 3pm and concludes at 6pm. More information will be shared with you closer to the time.

Children and young people in Australian education settings have differing needs, abilities and interests. We believe that all students are unique and learn differently. It's important that we are mindful and respectful of diversity. We have therefore arranged for Jeff Souter to work with our staff this week. His role is Head of Assistive Technologies; statewide services Disability and Inclusion. He is working with teachers to support them in their planning in making reasonable adjustments for the students in their classes. Staff additionally unpack what reasonable adjustments would look like for their students. A reasonable adjustment is a measure or action taken to help a student with a learning difficulty take part in their education on the same basis as their peers. Reasonable adjustments have a few lenses such as how are we able to support a child to access, engage and/or demonstrate their learning, using assistive technologies.

Additionally, assistive technology helps students who have difficulty speaking, typing, writing, remembering, pointing, seeing, hearing, learning, walking, and many other things. Different disabilities require different assistive technologies alongside reasonable adjustments. Learning happens when teaching responds to these individual qualities. As there is no single method of teaching that supports the learning of all students, teachers make adjustments to enable every student to participate in learning. This afternoon there will be a whole staff professional development session on reasonable adjustments made to students accessing learning as well as various assistive technologies students are able to access.

I feel so blessed to be part of our wonderful school community in our sunshine state. Thank you to all the families who have been so generous in your time and kind words over the past semester. Please know that I have an open door policy and welcome all of our families to share their celebrations with me and hear how we can be the best we can be.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Kind regards,

Dehlia
