What is the subject about?

Units 1 & 2 BEAL aim to build students’ understanding of how spoken and written Standard Australian English (SAE) is used to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and for a range of purposes. Students develop and extend the ability to listen, speak, read and write for everyday and academic purposes.

 

Units 

Unit 1: English for learning (English for everyday purposes; English for academic purposes)

Unit 2: English for life (English for self-expression; English in the media) 

 

Skills you will develop

  • reading and engaging with a text for meaning
  • recognising and using vocabulary, text structures, language features and ideas appropriate to the purpose of a text  
  • develop and employ writing processes
  • applying appropriate conventions of language, including spelling, vocabulary, syntax and forms, for a range of academic purposes
  • identifying and discussing the language, structures, features, conventions and information used in media texts to construct points of view and position audiences 
  • explaining the impact on audiences of an author’s constructions choices

Pathways

The study aims to prepare students for their study of VCE Units 1-4 English/ EAL, as well as their further English-language education, tertiary or vocational education, and future employment.
