PICTURE BOOKS

There are some impressive partnerships vying for Picture Book of the Year.

They include Bruce Whatley's heart-stoppingly realistic and varied bushfire effects coupled with Jackie French's poetically wrenching words in Fire; Ritva Voutila's wintry European architecture with Margaret Wild's formal, mythic text in The Stone Lion, a plangent tale in the tradition of Oscar Wilde about the statue outside the library that longs to move and live and is fleetingly granted his wish when concern for a pair of destitute children warms his stone heart; and my personal favourite: a stunning picture book metaphor, readily accessible to a young child, for living one's life in a new language.  My Two Blankets is a seamless and really illuminating marriage of pictures (Freya Blackwood) and words (Irena Kobald).
