Leadership

Hola Padres y Familias,
It has been a marvellous start to Term 2, with all students coming back to school relaxed and ready for learning following their holiday break. It was wonderful to see so many smiles on the friendly faces of our Parent/Carer community, who were also excited to be back at Newlands Primary School. It has been fantastic visiting the students in their learning spaces across the school this week. The F/1s are retelling their holidays and the Spanish fiesta by notetaking with pictures. It has been such a positive experience to see our students excitedly share their experiences using the pictures to remind themselves of their details! The 2/3s have been screaming ‘Action’, ‘Cut’ and ‘Do it again!’ as they record their movies all across the school. They are all very much looking forward to being on the ‘Big Screen’ for their movie premiere at the Pentridge Cinemas later in the term. The 4/6s have waited all holidays for their mail to arrive from Margaret Thatcher School in Spain, and their pen pal relationships continue to grow.
We would once again like to share our appreciation for all the families and parent helpers that have been supporting the students in the classrooms with their reading and engagement with the Math's Builders Program. We have received many apologetic emails from families being unable to take part in the classroom support program, but we continue to recommend that families support their child's reading at home; using Nessy, Raz-Kids and Essential Assessment on a regular basis. This is important for establishing routines and is an authentic way for families to participate in their child’s education. After requests from families, Newlands will begin a few new initiatives in Term 2:
There will be a Maths Club starting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday before school starting at 8:30am. This is another great initiative that will allow the student-parent-teacher involvement in supporting students at Newlands in Mathematics. It has been wonderful to see that this program has been met with such enthusiasm, with all positions for Term 2 already being filled. Following assessment of the success of the program in Term 2, it will be revisited for Term 3.
In week 2 of this term, we are commencing Spanish classes for families. These will begin next Wednesday between 6:00pm – 8:00pm and will continue over the next 8 weeks in Jose/Kylee’s room (4/6 Portables). These classes will be led by Sole, our fabulous learning assistant. We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm from our Parent/Carer community, with over 25 families starting these sessions next week. Estamos muy emocionadas de que estas sesiones comiencen! As always, the school continues to welcome feedback to improve the fantastic place that is Newlands Primary School.
This school has a strong relationship with the local community and would like to thank Puglisi, Woolworths, Nelson Alexander, Kelly Sports, Deganis and Newlands Community Centre who continually support our school and its events. This proves to be a great segway in reminding families of the PFA Movie Night Fundraiser next week! The annual event is always a favourite on the Newlands Calendar, please look below for more information.
It will be another big week at Newlands with not only the Movie Night, but Cross Country (parents are invited to come along!) and School Tours beginning next week!
Have a great weekend,
Luke.
