Year 6 Biomimicry excursion
On Tuesday, the Year 6 students participated in a STEM excursion at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. The focus of the excursion was Biomimicry and children:
- Learned about examples of bio-inspired inventions and the nature models that influenced them.
- Identified biological strategies of nature through guided nature observation.
- Brainstormed their own nature-inspired ideas.
- Utilised design thinking and STEM skills to apply the practice of biomimicry in a Design Challenge.
What is Biomimicry?
Design Challenge
Our students used the Eucalyptus tree as their inspiration. They had to look at the different forms and functions Eucalyptus have and create their own biomimicry design. Giang, Ayva and Addison presented their design to the group of schools. They used the functions of the Eucalyptus tree to help it collect water and repel insects to design a cover for crops that captures water that can be then squeezed over the crops. It also has a scent to repel any insects that may eat the crops.
Parent Helper Session
There will be another Parent Helper Session next Wednesday the 10th of May at 3:00 pm. This will be held in the Hall. If you would like to assist in any of the classrooms, we would love to see you next Wednesday.
