Sustainability

Shannon Sargeant

We are super excited this year to have been selected as a finalist for the Resource Smart Schools Awards.  Some key information about the awards are:

  • The ResourceSmart School Awards are the Victoria’s largest sustainability celebration for primary and secondary school students, teachers and school volunteers taking remarkable sustainability action.
  • The ResourceSmart School Awards is a positive, future focused event which celebrates sustainability leadership in Victorian primary and secondary schools.
  • For 2023, the Awards theme is ‘Achieving great things’ and celebrates sustainability actions taking place now in ResourceSmart Schools across Victoria.
  • Finalist schools will attend an awards ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 15 June 2023.

We have been selected in the category of Curriculum Leadership (Secondary). The driving force behind our success is the staff at LHC along with the student Sustainability Team. Together they have created new curriculum, integrating not only sustainability into each faculty, but also in the creation of units across faculties and themes across all year levels. We should all be really proud of the work that has been achieved and I am looking forward to continual growth in this area.

Bottle Top Competition

The Sustainability Team is running a competition to see which house can collect the most plastic bottle tops. Bottle tops are an item that due to their small size, often do not make it through the recycling facilities. By collecting these tops and creating a mural outside the library, we will be diverting this plastic from landfill and possibly waterways where it can negatively impact the natural environment. All students are encouraged to create a drawing based on the theme ‘Ocean’ which can become part of the overall mural.

The Sustainability Team meets  every Thursday lunchtime in the Sustainability Hub. All students are welcome to join us and be a part of positive change in the College.
