Action for Happiness

April 2023

Active April

As the days get colder and the sun dims earlier, we can think more about 'what's on Netflix,' rather than 'what  interesting thing I will discover on my after-school walk.'

The Action for Happiness website encourages us to be active this month, something my body and mind need, especially as I spend a portion of my holidays planning for Term 2.

This morning I opened a present a friend sent me = a gardening apron and gloves, and a very sturdy pair of secateurs. I spent the afternoon pruning and weeding, which goes a little way to ticking off number 1 on the calendar, "Commit to being more active this month starting today.'  I have also organised a morning walk with my neighbour tomorrow - even if we are walking to our local coffee shop!

I'm unsure whether I can turn number 9 into anything 'fun,' but I  might put in my new earbuds, play some flamenco music and dance while I dust.

What are the health benefits of exercise for children?

Exercise can be anything that makes children's breathing faster and their hearts beat quicker. Sitting less and exercising for 60 minutes a day 9not necessarily all at once) has many health benefits for children:

  • they will develop healthy bones, muscles and joints
  • they will grow a healthy heart and lungs
  • their coordination, strength and muscle control will improve
  • they will maintain a healthy body weight
  • the body will become more flexible
  • their balance and posture will improve
  • the brain will develop vital connections, leading to improved concentration and thinking skills
  • they are less likely to develop chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

As we near the end of the holidays, encourage your children to be as active as possible over the remaining few days.

Note to self - even if the weather begins to get a bit discouraging these holidays, I can either:

  • rug up for a beach walk
  • or participate in the yoga or aerobic shows that have been added to Netflix recently!

I hope you have been having a relaxing, yet active holiday.
