STUDENT ACTIVITIES

YEAR 8 VISUAL ART

Last year every year 8 student made their own indigenous tile in visual arts.

They have finally been made into panels and put up outside near the D5 art room.

The year 8’s (2022) were really excited to finally see their work up on display.

This year the year 8’s will be making a vertical coral garden representing global warming, looking at the Great Barrier Reef.

YEAR 10 FOOD STUDIES

Our two year 10 Food Studies classes have hit the ground running in the kitchen this term. They have been learning about the differences between food allergies and intolerances and have been cooking recipes that exclude related ingredients. In week 3, students cooked steamed coriander chicken balls and pork gyoza and their presented dishes were amazing. Well done year 10’s!

BYO containers in Food Studies

We are no longer be providing hard plastic takeaway containers in Food Studies. We have made this decision due to the cost and environmental concerns with these containers not being disposed of correctly and ending up in our yard or in land fill. Instead, students must bring their own containers to their practical class. This was added to the booklist for 2023. You may already have the containers required at home. There are two types of reusable containers that students could bring (plastic only please!);

A container that holds at least 1L

A rectangular 20cm x 30cm container, for biscuits/muffins.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Food Studies teacher.

KOORIE YOUTH SUMMIT

On Wednesday the 31st March, six of our students attended the annual Koorie Youth Summit held at Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association in Hastings.

Many Secondary schools attended the event and gathered at the Ngargee grounds where a traditional Welcome to Country smoking ceremony took place.

Students then took part in a cobweb activity and viewed a moving performance by the Aboriginal Ant Brothers. Other activities included a musical performance by Alice Skye and her band, Sandart, Bracelet making, and opportunities for students to mix with each other through morning tea and lunch as well as Headspace breakout and Mornington Shire  with giveaways.

The day finished up with students participating in yarning circles with elders and taking home their own tote bags.

A great day was had by all.

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY BREAKFAST

On behalf of Mount Eliza Secondary College, we extend a big thank you to the Rotary Club for organising an insightful women's breakfast in celebration of International Women's Day. It was an excellent opportunity for our female senior leadership team to listen and learn from the guest speakers, Shabnam Safa and Suzanne Nielsen. We were all inspired by the positive impacts both of these women have made in their respective fields, and we appreciate them sharing their experiences and challenges with us,  presenting their own insights on how we can impact our own positive impacts and changes within the community.

Listening to Shabnam Safa discuss her journey and experience coming to Australia really impacted the way all of us feel about refugee acceptance and the importance of inclusivity within a community. After listing to Suzanne Nielsen all of us appreciated how lucky we are to be living in a time where women can pursue a career and were inspired by her work in addiction treatment that has allowed her to travel the world .

Both their speeches were filled with passion and dedication to these important issues, leaving us feeling empowered and motivated to make a difference, the motto of the day being "Everyone, everywhere can play a part."

YEAR 9 EPP FORUM

Year 9 Enhanced Performance Program- Victorian Young Leaders Global Youth Forum

Over the past two weeks, Year Nine EPP students had the opportunity over three consecutive days to talk to experts and people around the world about what it's like to be a global citizen.

We have been in online main sessions, hearing from Chris Higgins (Melbourne University), Jahin Tanvir (2021 Young Canberra Citizen of the Year in Individual Community Service) and Darcy McGauley-Bartlett (previous role as an Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer for Victoria Police) about what its like to be a global citizen and leader. Over the three days, we explored things like the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development goals and developed action plans to help the problem.

We were split into multiple breakout sessions to connect with students across Australia and from around the world to share our ideas and experiences with local differences. This included speaking with students from schools in China, Indonesia and Japan. We also had sessions that focused on improving our public speaking and intercultural understanding.

Overall, the experience was very beneficial to our Year 9 EPP group, and it helped to broaden our understanding of the way the world works, and who we are as people in this society.

ESCAPE ROOM

The student leadership team was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in an exciting activity that provided not only a wonderful time but also a great way to develop critical life-long skills. The activity was an escape room, which involved completing a series of challenging puzzles to escape before the 60 minutes were up. The escape rooms had two themes: ‘Captured in a Wizard Lair’ and ‘Stranded on Mars’. The leaders had to collaborate with each other to solve a series of challenging puzzles and problems, which required patience, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. These skills are also vital as they are the key ingredients to being a good leader and role model in the school community. Overall, the escape room was a great success, giving the student leadership team a memorable and enjoyable experience, while encouraging them to hone essential skills to support them in their leadership roles and beyond.

Instrumental music students showed off their hard work this term with a wonderful performance on the last day of school, in the quadrangle.

They all showed great enthusiasm, team spirit and the entire MESC community  enjoyed the great performance leading into the holidays
