Careers Update
Welcome to Term 2! Topics in this newsletter include VCE and Careers Expo, Year 10 Work Experience and Preparation for VTAC and SEAS/Scholarships applications opening.
Year 11 & 12 VCE Students - VCE & Careers Expo
On Friday, we will be heading off to the Caulfield Racecourse to the annual VCE & Careers Expo. This will be the first time in a few years that Bayside Christian College students will have the opportunity to attend.
There will be exhibitors from various universities and tertiary training organisations as well as seminars running throughout the day on various VCE related topics. Students are encouraged to attend the most appropriate and applicable seminars at 11:30am and 12:15pm.
In past years, the universities have made available information and course guides for the courses they deliver. Students are encouraged to take this opportunity to talk with the exhibitors and collect any relevant information available in the time in between seminars.
Please note that the Expo will also be open to the public on Saturday 6th May - for students who would like to return with a parent/carer. General admission tickets available for $12. There will be seminars running throughout Saturday also.
Year 10 Work Experience
At the end of term 2, Year 10 students will embark on a week of Work Experience. The majority of this year’s year 10 cohort were fortunate to have already experienced work experience as year 9 students. As year 10s, the students are expected to obtain a placement that is more in line with their future career vocation. For some students, this is a great “trial” time to experience what it might be like to work in their industry of interest. Most students find that with appropriate placements, this experience is beneficial in either confirming their interest in the industry or highlighting areas of the work that are less desirable.
A quick reminder from the checklist distributed to students at the end of term 1:
Is your form is completed?
Check the employer has written their full name and signed the lower section on the front of the form. Check the student and parent sections on the back of the form have been completed AND signed. DO NOT ask Mr. Manning to sign your form!
My form is completed – what now?
Forms can be returned to Ms. Smith via front reception at the office on south campus or via the north campus staff room. (You will need to ask a teacher to place your form/s in my pigeon hole.)
Important Dates to Remember:
Monday 19 June - Friday 23 June is Year 10 Work Experience week and Friday 5 May is the last day for forms to be returned
Preparation for VTAC & SEAS/Scholarships Applications
One of the topics discussed in individual meetings with the Year 12 students last term was preparation for the upcoming VTAC & SEAS Applications. During discussions with students, it was advised that any students wanting to submit a SEAS application - specifically in the Financial or Medical category - will need to obtain their professional evidence to support their application as soon as possible.
Appointments for Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and other professionals can have quite long wait lists due to COVID impact and high demand in the past few years. SEAS guaranteed review date is in mid September and strongly advised that applications are submitted for review before this date to enable enough time to complete any additional requirements as advised by VTAC. SEAS Applications close on 6 October. There are no late applications accepted by VTAC after this date.
Currently, the mid year applications are still open, so the results available on CourseSearch are applicable only to those courses. Applications for 2024 open on 31 July. All information for 2024 course offerings will be available from that date.
Timely applications close on 28 September, with late/very late applications until 1 December. It is strongly encouraged that all students wishing to apply for 2024 courses submit their applications by the timely closing date - failing to do so will incur additional fees. I will be available during August and September to meet with students during school hours to support and assist with the application process.
At the start of Term 3, I will meet individually with all of the Year 12 students again to obtain permission for sharing of VCE Results and ATAR and to discuss VTAC application intentions. VCE Results and ATAR will be released at 7am on 11 December. I will be available on this day for counselling for any students who wish to discuss change of preferences - due to results received.
