COLLEGE CAPTAINS FAREWELL

It’s safe to say that my six years of high-schooling weren’t exactly conventional- but I have no hesitation in saying that the past 6 years have also been as fulfilling as they could be. As a Year 7, I was too shy to order my own food at a restaurant, yet now here I am as a College Captain! My journey through the school was constantly exciting and engaging, and I feel like I was able to pursue any path I wanted to while I’ve been at this school. Although I will remember so many wonderful things about the school, I think the relationships I have made will be what I cherish most. I have met the people who I feel truly understand me and make me happy, and had teachers who supported and helped for me through all of the ups and downs. Despite the lockdowns, I have found that my relationships with the school community remained as strong and fulfilling as ever, and I am forever grateful for the laughter, excitement and care which I have experienced from Year 7 to 12.As my final year of school comes to an end, I am so happy that myself and the rest of the school was able to experience an uninterrupted year- I want to spend as much time being around my peers and teachers as possible! This year I feel as though I have realised how valuable it is to be at a school in which everyone is accepted and cared for, and I strongly advise everyone to make the most of their time here and appreciate the wonderful school. In the future, I hope to study some field of law- I think- at university, and I have my heart set on doing exchange. I am really intrigued by the world around me, and because of this I want to study overseas for some time, during which I can hopefully travel too. Through this, I hope to be able to make changes for the better in the world in order to create a brighter future for those to come. That being said, who knows where I’ll be in five years !I’ll always remember Dromana College for the happiness it gave me, as well as the education I received. Thank you to the school for all that you haved one for me.

I’d say high school was like a marathon. At the starting line of Year 7, I was incredibly nervous but excited at the same time, unsure of how the next 6 years would be. So focused on the days as they come, getting through the morning for recess, then third period for lunch, and finally fourth period for the end of the day, suddenly, I find that those 6 years have passed in what feels like both no time and forever.

In the first half of the run, my junior years, I found my rhythm in maths and science, which I have relied on in my senior years. That being said, I found enjoyment in a variety of subjects outside of science such as outdoor ed, food studies, humanities, and Japanese. The teaching I have received has created a hunger to know more and understand and explore the world and society we live in, and I am grateful to my teachers who encouraged this passion and answered my endless questions.

Schooling was so much more than education though. There were my friends, who have made this experience noticeably more fun, full of laughs and enjoyable than if they hadn’t been alongside me, and it is to them that I am most thankful for. They have supported me to keep moving forward, one foot in front of the other, day after day, as they do the same beside me. Further, I found encouragement in my cousins and brother, who I am incredibly fortunate to have shared the Dromana College journey with since the very beginning. I now aspire to show them every day that their strength and belief in me was not for nothing.

Reflecting on how I composed myself in this run, I have certainly learned how to pace myself; when to work harder and when to remain steady, conserving my energy, something that took an annoyingly long time to learn. Though lessons come from the journey not the destination, after all, so I focus on the path that I have taken as I approach the finish line.  I’m exhausted but I have made it this far so I will not give up. I will make it across that finish line and graduate with a smile on my face.

I want to start my send off letter with the word that means something to me and that word is ‘honest’. This word has been one of great significance to me throughout my schooling and life in general. So, I will be honest with you all in saying that school wasn’t always easy or trouble free for me. There were times where I struggled and I thought I would not be able to finish. My other peers and future students may or may not relate to this at one point or another.

But the thing is, you see, I started to be honest with my teachers and more importantly myself. I asked myself what I wanted to achieve whilst being at school and began to set goals for myself knowing that the only way I could do this was if I believed in myself and surrounded myself with people who supported me. There will be times when you tell yourself that you can’t do something- not just in school but life as well- but you need to be honest with yourself and think there is nothing stopping me from trying. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for help. Everyone is unique and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. This is natural, this is what got me where I am in school today. I was honest with myself about what my strengths and weaknesses were and thought to myself; how I can improve these?

I am very grateful for, not just the time I have had at Dromana College, but for the help provided by some of the most amazing teachers who are so encouraging and whom I am lucky to have been taught by. I am grateful for the friendships I have made that, no doubt, will be ongoing after school and the experiences and opportunities given to me that have helped grow my courage. I have learnt how to believe in myself and back myself, finding the confidence I have now. One example of this acquired confidence, is being a College Captain . If you had asked the girl in Year Seven who would get nervous to speak in front of big crowds and would cry a little when struggling to write in English. She never would have imagined herself being where she is now. She would be so proud of future-me.

So I want to thank Dromana College, my teachers and my peers for helping me shape the person I am today. My plans for the future is to complete my Diploma & Bachelors in Nursing. Best wishes to all the students in Year 12 2022 and I hope their plans and hard work pay off.

As my time at Dromana comes to an end, I am grateful for the memories I have made here. From the supportive staff and amazing friends, to the valuable lessons that I have learnt along the way. I will be forever grateful.

My journey throughout college has gone by too fast. I  cannot believe that six years have passed since I began my secondary schooling. As I look back, I begin to remember all of the incredible experiences that I was able to participate in. From breaking my arm in Year 7 playing soccer for the school team, to singing in music soirees and performing in front of hundreds of people in the Chicago the school musical. I feel so lucky that I got to be a part of the senior girls cricket team that made it to the state finals and I also spent years waking up at 6 every Tuesday morning to get to dance club. All of these are truly memories that I will never forget.  I think it is safe to say that I have fully immersed myself in the opportunities this school has to offer.

As my life after school continues, I aspire to pursue my passions and continue my education  at university. Although the future is unclear, I find comfort in the knowledge that Dromana College has prepared me for the world ahead and provided me with an education that has opened up so many pathways. I have been so fortunate to have had such a wonderful and fulfilling schooling experience. It has been an honour to be a part of such an amazing student leadership program. Since Year 9, I have been fortunate enough to be one of the school’s many student leaders. This experience has allowed me to collaborate alongside so many amazing people and inspired me to make positive change. My involvement in the music department has allowed me the opportunity to gain so many wonderful friendships and it has helped to give me the confidence to become the person I am today. I will forever treasure the supportive environment that was provided to not only me, but to all of my fellow peers.

I will never forget the years I have spent at this school. I would like to thank Dromana College for providing me with the memories and friendships that will stay with me throughout my life.
