Numeracy

All of our children in the Prep, One and Two Hubs have been working hard this term to develop their skills in Numeracy.

Our Prep Hub has been learning more about measuring. They have been investigating Capacity and Mass through some great hands-on experiences. Children have been exposed to a range of new vocabulary related to measurement and have been able to compare and order items based on their capacity and mass. Cooking at home with your child might be a good way to help them to apply their new knowledge.

Our One Hub has been investigating Multiplication by discussing equal groups and applying their knowledge of skip counting to find the total number of objects in a collection. Some children are also investigating how to represent multiplication problems as an array. Arrays can be found all around our environment, when out and about, invite your children to spot arrays in houses or shops.

The children in the Two Hub have also been working hard to develop their understanding of measurement. They have been investigating Capacity and Mass through the use of formal and informal units of measurement as well as investigating maps and giving directions to each other. It would  be a great idea to ask your children to help give you directions to and from familiar places or even make a map of your home.

Learning Diversity

Around 1 in 6 Australians have a disability. Disability can be seen or can be invisible! On Friday 2nd of December, St. John’s will acknowledge and celebrate International Day of People with Disability. We invite children to wear rainbow clothes on this day. Our students will explore disability over the week through story books, videos, conversations and maybe even a guest speaker!

As always, St. John’s strives to be sensitive to the values, beliefs and perspectives of our school community. If you have expertise, perspective or personal experience of disability to share, please get in touch.

Faith

Carols

Save the date for our Christmas Carols evening! You may have heard the buzz already from our children who have been practising their carols with Helen during performing arts. Please come along for what will be a wonderful way to celebrate as a community.

Faith in Action:

Our wonderful Community Leaders have organised a food and essential items drive for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s Christmas appeal. This is faith in action, our Catholic Mission, to serve and to support those who are in need of care, safety and kindness.

On behalf of the Community Leaders, we thank families for their generosity during this time.

Sport

Sporting schools -  Tennis Australia

Last week our grade 3 and 4 children welcomed coach Vanessa from Tennis Australia.  Vanessa is conducting two tennis sessions to further enhance the children's tennis skills. A particular focus of this program is developing appropriate and inclusive ways for all children to be involved in tennis.

This program is in partnership with Sporting Schools.  Sporting Schools is a $400 million Australian Government initiative designed to help schools increase children's participation in sport and connect them with community sport opportunities.

Kind regards,
