CEPS COMPETES IN THE MATHS OLYMPIAD

Every year, the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) organise the Junior Division Olympiad for students in Years 5 and 6.  This competition is specifically designed to stimulate and challenge students at primary school level.  It teaches major problem solving strategies and strengthens students’ mathematical intuition prior to starting high school.

This year, C.E.P.S. ran the Olympiad as part of our problem solving lessons for all Years 5 and 6 students.  There were five rounds of questions throughout the year.  It was great to see students having a go at these problems and then discussing their different strategies.

At the start of the year, some students selected to be on the school team for their results to be sent to APSMO.  Other students did not select to be on the team but still applied themselves to solving these problems in class.

Our school’s official team score was 160, which placed us in the top 50% of schools entered.

The achievements of the following students need to be recognised:

  • individually achieved a score of 6 or more:
    • Noah G, Connor P, Owen C, Charlie S, Raf T, Sophie H, Claire C, Kanush P, Charlie H, Ash M, Alex L, Rehatt S, Omer A, Emma P, Milana V, Saxon N, Ryutaro I, Liam C, Ethan D, Tom R, Vivian K, Julian R
  • individually achieved a score of 10 or more:
    • Eric G, Cameron B, Lachie D, Chase G, Nameer W, Angus W.
  • individually scored in the top 25% of the competition, earning a Top 25% achiever patch:
    • Freddie M, Nuoqi S, Aarav V
  • individually scored in the top 10% of the competition, earning a Top 10% achiever pin:
    • Johnny W
  • individually achieved the highest score for C.E.P.S. (23 out of a possible 25), earning a trophy:
    • Yizhe M

We are looking forward to seeing what C.E.P.S. can achieve in 2023!

Students will be presented certificates at today's assembly.

Photos will be included in next week's newsletter.

GYMNASTICS IN PE

Over the last four weeks on Wednesday’s, the Foundation and Grade 1 classes have been attending gymnastics sessions.  This was provided through the Sporting School Grant which allows for extra sessions for extra classes to participate in extra sporting opportunities.  The students have had a fabulous time learning about their own body strength, perseverance, flexibility and problem-solving abilities, through a specialised gymnastic program run by Teagan from the Highett Youth Club, gymnastics.

It has been a lot of fun!
