Sports Report

Semester 1

By Sports Coordinator - Mrs Currey

Wee Waa High has plunged back into a range of sporting events after the cancellation of school sports across NSW in 2020.

The year started out with the annual school swimming carnival at the local Wee Waa swimming pool. Students participated competitively and for fun gaining valuable points for their sporting houses. After all the points were tallied, Merah were eventual winners out scoring Namoi by the smallest of margins, with Bella Cruickshank and Hayden Shearin accepting the honour on behalf of students. Mekhi Ross qualified for the North West swimming carnival in Armidale, gaining a place in the North West team to attend the CHS Championships at Wollongong.

Matilda Currey and Alisha Conomos displayed their talents on the touch football field gaining selection in the North West girls touch teams. Matilda travelled to Wollongong and represented in the under 15 age group, whilst Alisha travelled to Mudgee and represented in the opens age group for the final time in her school career. Both girls displayed exceptional sportspersonship and scored points for their teams during the respective CHS State carnivals.

Dustyn Allen and Kyne Allen continued to demonstrate their skills in lawn bowls, travelling to represent the North West team in lawn bowls both in singles and doubles. Both students played exceptionally, with Dustyn coming away with a 4th in the singles and 5th in the doubles, whilst Kyne placed 12th in the singles.

At the end of Term Two, Dustyn Allen and Zack Doring represented the North West at St John’s in the team’s lawn bowls CHS competition. Their contribution to the team saw their team placed 3rd at the NSW CHS State Championships. Kyne Allen also attended the NSW State carnival as a representative of the North Coast team. Kyne volunteered to support North Coast by volunteering to play as part of their team so they had enough players to participate in the State carnival. Wee Waa High are very proud of Kyne’s actions reflecting the values of sportsmanship.

In team sports, students have committed to playing in the North West knock-out competition in softball, lawn bowls, netball, touch football and soccer. Unfortunately, due to wet weather a forfeit saw Narrabri High progress in the soccer, however, Mr Kiely plans to play friendly games later in the year with them.

Mr Legge has accompanied the WWHS lawn bowls team consisting of Kyne, Dustyn and Lillianne to games throughout the region. Exceptional skills saw very convincing defeats of Coonabarabran High and Warialda High, which places our school lawn bowls team in the North West regional final, yet to be played.

The girls touch football team had an easy run to the quarterfinals due to a bye the first round then a forfeit against Coonamble High School. They played Narrabri High School at Narrabri defeating them 8-2. The team progressed to the semi-finals where they faced Quirindi High School who were no match for our girls as we won comprehensively 14-0. All the girls played brilliantly especially the young girls stepping up and feeling comfortable against much older girls. They then travelled to Inverell playing a strong outfit who eventually won 5-3. The girls held their own only having the game taken from them in the final minutes of the game. As the girls placed second in the North West region they will go up against Sydney South West Regional finalist ‘The Hills Sports High’ at Narrabri in week 1 term 3.

The boy’s open’s touch team attended Coonamble to play Coonamble High in their first match, with limited training opportunities the boys played well under the guidance of coach, Lachlan Trindall. The boys were all keen to ramp-up training to develop their touch football skills further in preparation for the 2022 Knock out competition.

The open’s girls softball team had a Gala Day at Narrabri High School playing Tamworth High, Coonabarabran High and Narrabri High. The girls played well winning 2 games and losing 1, tying with Narrabri High School who became North West champions and progressing on a countback. The girls demonstrated skills and the North West girls team coach encouraged the girls to attend trials later in the year.

The local Netball School Cup Competition took place in Narrabri late in Term 2. WWHS entered a 9/10 boys team and 9/10 girls team, with students from year 8 volunteering to playing up into a higher level to ensure teams could be entered. The girls team remained undefeated all day, demonstrating exceptional skills and attitudes throughout the day, ensuring their place as 1st in the local competition and then progressing through to the Northern Inland Regional final in Tamworth later in July. The boys team impressed everyone with their footwork skills and game intensity, only losing one game and placing 2nd in the local competition. They will also progress through to the Northern Inland Regional final.

Wee Waa High held their annual athletics carnival on a cold and overcast day in week 9. Attendance numbers were down, however, participation and enthusiasm were up ensuring it was an enjoyable, fun day of competition across age groups. A big thank you to Miss Bunner and Mr Legge for their organisation of the day. Miss Bunner is busy tally up the results, so age champions and champion house will be announced next term.

Finally, a big thank you to all the parents who helped transport students to and from events, parents and community members who volunteered their time to be game officials, staff for their organisation and commitment to school sport, and to the students for demonstrating their love of sport and how it promotes and develops positivity and pride within our school community.
