Couture Versus Fast Fashion Excursion

Year 12 Fashion students strutted into Chadstone for a field trip recently, to investigate the difference between High fashion and Fast fashion. The students tentatively walked into some of the high-end stores where they were surprisingly made to feel welcome.

In Dior we found that there were very few garments on display and most only had one of each style and size. The students then ventured to the Chanel store where one of the staff, Adam, spoke at length about the Chanel brand and how the Chanel jackets are skillfully made. Next was Dolce and Gabbana, the sales guide explained how the Italian duo were creating new garments out of patch worked pieces of remnants to reduce land fill. This was very relevant to our sustainability unit.

After having a taste of the high life, the students went into the fast fashion stores and made comparisons about the stock quantity and quality. They looked at the types of fabrics that were used, the shortcuts that were taken and the overall construction and fabric.

The students had a wonderful afternoon on their excursion and our now ready to put some couture processes into action.

Year 10 Fashion Workshop - Magical Botanical

Year 10 Fashion Workshop students have been working this semester to generate designs and construct a garment in response to a design brief - "Magical Botanical".

Students have been working from a pattern to make a dress suitable for a summery garden party and are learning dressmaking techniques such as pattern grading, overlocking, setting in sleeves and how to insert a zipper. Earlier in Term 2 students participated in an online workshop with Todd Heggie, a fashion design lecturer from LCI Melbourne, who taught everyone how to render fabric textures and embellishments, such as sequins, on paper, using a range of techniques. Students are currently producing a folio of designs in response to their design brief, using the techniques taught by Todd.
