Elevate Education Incursion

by Julia Haralabakos Year 11 St Martha

As exams are approaching and, for most of us, the first time completing exams, we were lucky enough to have presenters from the Elevate Education company come in to help Year 11s prepare for the upcoming weeks. During periods 5 and 6 on the 25th of May we were able to discuss and learn more about the key components to tackling exams. We split off into our Homeroom groups and were introduced to our own individual presenter from the company. During the session we were given activity booklets to help write down and remember tips and tricks to guide us into acing our exams. We went over the concept of time management, delving into ways to ensure that we had balance in our lives. From managing our school work, social priorities, hobbies and jobs as well as other commitments. In our groups, we were able to discuss our own personal experiences with studying and review how different study habits have worked or not worked for us in the past, which would help us refine our own study routines. Along with this, we looked at exam preparation mistakes, steps for preparation excellence and ways to stay calm in the exam room. We were equipped with sources for timetable templates as well as information guides on their website to help us with our study skills. This experience was a fun, informative and enthusiastic way to broaden our knowledge on what we can do to aid ourselves with exam preparation and things we should avoid to make sure we work to the best of our abilities.

Monash University Mentoring Program - Unopoly

by Veronica Bui and Chrystal Eam, Year 11LM

Last Friday,  a group of Year 11 students were given  the opportunity to have a session with a group of  Monash university students from the Access Monash Mentoring program. We were provided the chance to further expand our knowledge in uni life once we leave high school, in the form of a monopoly game.

The students were able to actively participate in their own groups, competing with each other across the game board, having to answer questions correctly that related to university. This got students engaged and to consider different types of opportunities for their futures more thoroughly.

The Monash mentors were more than supportive, providing us with insightful information and advice  in Uni life. Through this game, students were able to learn important aspects such as Uni courses, scholarships through VTAC and different ways to get into their dream course if not through their ATAR. We were also given tips on a variety of ways to make new friends through orientation days or social clubs and the differences between university and high school.

Overall, the students walked out with more knowledge about their upcoming life after high school. The session was also able to bring ease to some students as they were able to see that it was alright for things to not run smoothly as a majority of the time it doesn’t happen. There are an unlimited amount of chances out there for students to achieve.
