Leadership, S.R.C., Reading and Cats

By the way, Happy Mothers Day! (See front page....)

GRIP Leadership

On Thursday, 6th May, our three senior boys (Sonic, Marshall and Zai) attended the GRIP Leadership Course at the Southern Cross University (SCU).

Many other schools from our area also attended and there was a large and enthusiastic crowd in the auditorium.

The day was entertaining and fun, but also held some valuable lessons.

We learnt about planning, putting others first, following through and not always needing to take the lead. We explored our talents and interests and shared our ideas with others.

It was a valuable day.

Here’s what Marshall thought about the day:

When we got there, we went in and they directed us to our seats. First thing we did was we got our booklets and then we figured out there were fold out tables. We started doing the find-a-word and then there was a countdown.

The first thing was we went to page 10 and did some stuff about how to use the book. Then we did loud noises and it was hilarious because Zai had to go out the front.

He had to do air guitar, karate and other things. Then we went out to lunch.

We found some new handball players and me and Sonic were battling them and we won and they walked away. Then we went back in and did more loud noises and more stuff and then we went out and found some better handball players.

I learn about things to do for the school and we are going to try to improve the toilets. It was good!

Student Representative Council (S.R.C.) News

The SRC will be running a fund raiser for Stewart House on Wednesday, 19th May.

Each year 1,700 public school children in need come to Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT. During their stay, children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support.

This is balanced with health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle.

On Wednesday the 19th, our students are invited to come dressed out of uniform - wear what you like (as long as you can still do some school work in the clothes!) BUT if you choose to do this, the SRC asks that you bring a donation of (at least!) $2. This will then be put in an envelope to be sent off to Stewart House.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! By filling an envelope with a donation, Stewart House then put your name into a draw to win a holiday worth  $4 000!

Please help if you can.

Simultaneous Reading Day

Also on the 19th of May, we will participate in Simultaneous Reading day. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

The 2021 book is being read by the astronaut Dr Shannon Walker from the International Space Station!

Lucinda's Visit

The SRC are a busy group! They also arranged a visit this week from Lucinda, owner of Pets and Saddles in Lismore and avid cat carer.

The SRC donated $300 to Lucinda to help her care for and de-sex stray cats. Sonic gave us the idea, so that we could help out in the local community.

Myrtle has more:

Meow! Meow! On Wednesday we had a very special visit from Lucinda; a lady who helps and rehomes cats, kittens, dogs and birds. The S.R.C. decided to donate $300 to Lucinda to help and home her animals. And also it is very important to get your cat (or dog) desexed.

Because just getting one cat desexed can save 11,606,077 cats from being lost or homeless. But Lucinda also brought along two special friends! She brought an adorable cat called Lexy. We even got to pat her! She also brought a little bird she had been taking care of. Everybody loved it!

And don’t forget to say hi next time you drop in at pets and saddles!

Myrtle Hills,

S.R.C. Secretary
