Inews Update 2

Social Justice @ NHS

The Social Justice Group had their inaugural meeting, last Friday, with a diverse and dynamic group of students and staff in attendance. The aim of the group is to improve the wellbeing of humanity and the community. To do this the students will be driving their own projects, which might support local, national or global communities. Students will define an injustice, formulate a solution, plan, carryout the plan and evaluate outcomes.

The students’ first task is to promote the sale of lottery tickets to support the Ayui Foundation. This will test their creativity and develop their marketing skills, which the group will evaluate next term.

A big thanks goes to the parents who have made generous donations to the Ayui Foundation. If you are keen to support the Ayui Foundation please go to https://www.peopleschoicecu.com.au/northcote-high-school and buy some lottery tickets. 100% of ticket sales are returned to NHS. There are fantastic prizes to be won (3 Cars, $35000 Harvey Norman shopping spree and more). Online purchases close on the 31st of March.

The Social Justice group is looking for community involvement and would appreciate any assistance in educating students in philanthropy, running a social enterprise or helping make connections with community groups. If you believe you could assist in anyway, please contact Mr Donal  U   to discuss your ideas.(uahwatanasakul.donal.d@edumail.vic.gov.au)

Interschool debating

Our Year 12 debating team took part in the final of the annual Lions Club inter-school debating competition. The debate took place upstairs in the Olympic Hotel Preston, before a packed crowd of Lions and Lionesses and various representatives of the four schools involved. It is a great fund raining event that sees each school received a cheque for their school libraries. On this occasion Northcote went down to Santa Maria in a tough debate arguing that ‘Developing countries should implement disincentives to population growth’. Having won their way to the final in a previous round, Lily Chalmers, Luisa Romeo and Thomas Bell all spoke well and represented the school in a fine manner.

Lions Youth of the Year zone final

Lily Chalmers was also successful in winning her way to the Zone Final of the Lions Youth of the Year competition. She participated in an extended interview as well as giving two impromptu speeches and a prepared speech on realising the potential of Australia’s ageing population. Whilst not progressing to the next round Lily was chosen as the Best Public Speaker for the evening.

DAV round one report

This year Northcote has twelve teams with students from Years 7 – 12 in the inter-school debating competition. Round one was held on a wet and dreary evening in late March at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar. Ms Konstantinou, Tang Yu and myself were there to greet the excited students and to show them to their rooms.  Each grade had a different topic for the night and for our D Grade students the job was to defend or challenge the validity of celebrating Australia Day. There were lots of great arguments and some anxious delays as team members finally made their way to the debating rooms. Debating is great for research, writing, presenting and involves lots of team work. Everything we do should be a debate of one kind or another!

Year 7 debating program

Because of the great interest shown by Year 7 students in debating and public speaking a new program that will be delivered in school will begin in term two. Many students signed up for the program on the night of the Year 7 picnic and there will be more new and information forthcoming.

Northcote High School 90th birthday celebrations

We are very proud that our debating students have been invited to be art of the Northcote High School 90th birthday celebrations to be held in the hall on Monday 20th of March. As well as the principal Kate Morris and other guests our two school captains Matthew Thomas and Lily Chalmers will also address the guests. Lily, as well as being one of the school captains, has been part of the debating program at Northcote High School since Year 7.
