Her-story Hackathon!
Last week, to celebrate International Women’s Day, eighteen students from Year 7 to 12 participated in the inaugural Herstory Hackathon.
Initiated by the Young Workers Centre at Trades Hall, the Herstory Hackathon aimed to train young women to become Wikipedia editors and to increase the number of entries of notable Australian women on Wikipedia.
By the end of Thursday afternoon, twelve new entries had been made to Wikipedia including Sarah Howell – an comic writer and illustrator, Carolyn Tan – a neurosurgeon, Lyn White – CEO of Animals Australia, Margot Fink – young trans activist from Melbourne and Asphyxia – a children’s author and performer.
Northcote High School was the first school in Australia to hold the Herstory Hackathon and will become an annual fixture of the school’s International Women’s Day commemoration.
Bring it on!
Planning has started for the 2016 production, performances planned for the start of Term 3. Here are some rehearsal photos from last week - the set behind should be familiar - its from last year's Anything Goes.
VCE Geography
The two VCE Geography classes went on a fieldwork excursion to research how coastal erosion can be better managed on the Bellarine Peninsula. We went to a total of four beaches throughout the day: Point Lonsdale, Collendina, Ocean Grove and Barwon heads. We had a field work booklet that we filled with information such as the natural processes that were impacting the beach, human activities that occur at the beach, human impacts and how the coastline is managed. We will be turning all this information that we collected into a 2000 word fieldwork report. Overall this excursion was great fun and I can say on behalf of all the students who went, that we learnt a lot about the Bellarine Peninsula and how it is impacted by natural processes and human activities.
