Curriculum

It was another busy week of Remote Learning for the students. We are very proud of the commitment students are showing to their Remote Learning, completing and handing in the slides each day. It is great to see the enthusiasm and engagement continue.

As mentioned last week, students participated in Book Week activities and the Disco on Friday night which both ran very smoothly online. It was fantastic to see the range of costumes students wore on their zooms and we hope they enjoyed their virtual Book Week parade! Equally as impressive was the great turnout to our online disco. It was a great site to see on zoom all the amazing, colourful glow sticks and props being worn as well as the very impressive array of lights in the video backgrounds. Thanks to Mrs Jones for all her wonderful work putting together our disco.

For Wellbeing this week, students continued their exploration of empathy and the positive impacts being empathetic can have on people. Empathy is the capacity to recognise or imagine the emotions that are being experienced by someone else. It is a core skill for effective relationships. It helps people feel connected, understood and appreciated when others can empathise with them. In this lesson students watched a video from award winning professor Brené Brown about empathy and answered a range of questions that tested their understanding of the concept as well as how they are empathetic to their peers.

In Literacy, students continued their exploration of song analysis. They researched the purposes of song analysis and continued to develop their descriptive language skills when analysing and interpreting the lyrics and messages of powerful songs. Students also completed a Big Write writing assessment in which they wrote a story from one of two prompts. The first was a bird flying away from a log embedded in a river and the second a little girl reading in a room full of books. It was great to see the developments students have made from the writing unit spent specifically on sentence structure throughout their Narrative Big Writes. Within Reading, students continued to explore the themes and messages from “The Burnt Stick”, this time completing tasks from the various Book Club roles they explore throughout the year. These comprehension tasks allow students to create meaning and gain a greater understanding of the text and the real-world ideas presented.

In Maths, students continued to develop their understanding of concepts from both Division and Probability. In Division, students used videos to learn about a range of different strategies including long and short division that they can use to divide numbers, decimals, and fractions. Within these division problems some equations explored division with remainders, no remainders and remainders with a decimal. In Probability, students were given a range of star-tasked activities to extend their knowledge of chance. These activities investigated experiments involving equally likely outcomes, expected and observed probabilities, and two-step chance experiments. To follow on from investigating chance, students began interpreting stem and leaf plots and letter frequencies and will continue to explore the elements of data sets this week.

Have a great week!

Pupil of the Week

5/6B: Hayley S -

Well done Hayley for showing such love of learning and zest when putting together your costume for Book Week. You showed great creativity and passion for your character Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. Well done!

5/6C: Zoe G -

For displaying a love of learning when learning about new division and chance concepts, last week. Well done Zoe, for challenging yourself to complete the 3 Star Tasks and always being an active member in our small group sessions. Your insight and determination does not go unnoticed. Keep it up!

5/6SB: Jonathan X -

For writing a detailed analysis on the covid song by Sammy J. Jonathan, you planned your piece into paragraphs and used evidence from the text to support your opinions. Keep up the great effort!

5/6W: Brooke C -

For demonstrating the character strengths of curiosity and love of learning when exploring the probability of two-step chance experiments. You set out your mathematical thinking clearly and demonstrated increased confidence. Keep up the fantastic work, Brooke!
