Mission Day

Mission Day will be held on Friday 17 September for all students R-11 (optional for Year 12 students). The theme for the day is Felicity Fairytale, a theme that encompasses the Mary Ward value of FelicityAs stated in the Mission Statement, Felicity is an attitude of mind, a disposition of the heart which manifests itself in cheerfulness, good humour, joy, happiness, hope, optimism, friendliness, courtesy, positive thinking, inner peace, self-acceptance and courage”  (LSAC Mission Statement).  On this day, Loreto students are encouraged to dress up in keeping with this theme and participate in the fun and excitement of the day.

Mission Day will once again be slightly different this year due to the observance of COVID-19 requirements. Whilst the Junior and Senior students will join together for Liturgy, Talent Show and Activity Challenges, there will be no food for sale and students are reminded to bring their own Recess and Lunch. Students will be able to order a donut for Recess through the Tuckshop using their flexi schools account. Information about this will be conveyed closer to Mission Day.

On the day, we will commence with a Liturgy, and the students will then have a guest speaker. The traditional entertainment session will be run in the morning after Recess, whilst in the afternoon students will participate in a series of fun activities.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions parents will not be allowed to attend Mission Day. The school day will conclude at the usual time at 3:20pm for the Junior School students and 3:30pm for the Senior School students.

Debating

All teams are now drawing close to the end of their Debating season. Our Senior B and Intermediate A teams concluded with a mixture of wins and losses. It was encouraging to hear some say that they are already planning to continue with debating in 2022.

The Final round for Year 7 and 8 teams is next Tuesday – 31 August and for the Year 5/6 teams it will be Wednesday 11 September.

It is looking very likely that we will have a few teams moving into the finals. This will be confirmed in the next Newsletter.

ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools)

Four tests have now been completed: Digital Technologies, English, Spelling and Science. We have Mathematics next week for Years 2 to 8, and Writing has been deferred until Term 4. Year 9 students can now undertake Mathematics in Term 4. They would previously have missed out owing to their Camp.

Tournament of Minds

The good news here is that we can return to Flinders University, albeit the Tonsley Campus rather than the usual Bedford Park Campus. Filming student performances last year did not have the same atmosphere. Additionally, our teams generally do very well in the Spontaneous Challenge, which was removed from last year’s program. Our six teams, which equates to 40 students from Year 5 to Year 8, and six staff members, have three weeks remaining. Parents of students involved in this competition will be receiving more information and timetables early next week.

Co-curricular Sports

In the past two weeks the outstanding achievements have continued for our talented Loreto students. On Friday 13th August our Year 8/9 Knockout Netball team competed in Round 2 and won two very competitive matches to earn a place in the State Finals. On Tuesday 17th August our Year 10 Knockout team were successful in all three games and are excited to be joining the Year 7 team and the Year 8/9 team at the State Finals to be held next month. All three teams are a credit to our community and played Round 2 with determination, skill, and good sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Phoebe Neck who has been selected in the 2021 Touch Football South Australian U/14 girls National Youth Championship team. Phoebe will represent South Australia at the 2021 DoorDash National Youth Championships.

We are currently in the process of nominating Term 4 sports teams to SA Catholic Secondary Schools Girls Sport Association (SACSSGSA) and once we have further information, we will send an email to all students who have nominated to play co-curricular sport next term. Term 4 trainings and games will commence in Week 1, Term 4.

From the College Liturgist

The Feast of the Assumption of Mary was the focus of the week 5 liturgy in the Junior School. Prayer leaders told the story of Mary, a young woman who faced the challenges of motherhood and the great strength that goes along with that. The beautiful images we have of Mary, dressed in blue, often belie the reality of her true life. Mary continues to be a role model for women everywhere. From the mundane tasks of caring and feeding for her baby, to the unexpected trials of escaping to Egypt, the pride as her eldest son spoke with the priests, the people and the outcasts, watching the hatred build around her son and finally to standing at the foot of his cross, Mary’s life was far from the placid artistic images we have grown accustomed to.

Media currently shows us the face of Mary in the women escaping Afghanistan, clutching their children, traumatised and bewildered. We imagine Mary’s face at the foot of the cross and see it reflected in a mother’s torment as she surveys the aftermath of an accident and the loss of her child. Mother Mary is represented by the matriarchs whose families are separated by the effects of Covid, lockdowns, grounded planes and the unspoken heartache, missed occasions and loneliness.  Mary is the face of women everywhere; in the daily chores; in times of crisis holding family together; in sickness and in loss; in separation and of course, the times of joy and celebration. Hail Mary, full of grace. Blessed are you among women!

Liturgies and Masses

A liturgy marking the beginning of book week was led by Prayer and Liturgy leaders in the Junior school. Highlighting the most popular book of all times, the Bible, and its history was the focus.

Book week was also the focus of the R-2 Chapel Mass which took place on Tuesday of week 6. Our youngest students led the opening procession, read and took part in the Offertory procession in the Mass celebrated by Fr Paul Mullins. Seated in our historic, ethereal chapel, the girls were enthralled by our most sacred space and reacted with great awe and respect.

Chapel Mass led by the Year 9 cohort,  focused on the work of Mary Ward International.  The Mass was celebrated by Fr Eka Tanaya who spoke to the girls about the importance of the Gospel reading from Matthew, reminding us to love God and to love our neighbour.  Fr Eka reflected that Mary Ward, and the sisters who followed in her work, were motivated by their deep love of God. A natural outflowing of this love was demonstrated in the sisters’ actions and work in schools and communities. This love of neighbour continues today in the work of the Loreto and IBVM sisters in schools globally and through agencies such as Mary Ward International.
