Year 12 students studying Japanese have been having a fun time learning about Japanese culture and language first hand.
They have been exchanging letters in English and Japanese with students in Japan. These letters are about a festival called Tanabata, and Summer activities.
The Year 12 students are preparing for their oral exam in October. This sounds daunting, and not at all fun. However, they have been able to choose their own topic for discussion. If you have to prepare for an exam, why not learn more about manga, pop idols, cool stationery, gaming culture, and awesome Japanese vending machines?
We thank the wonderful Ayako Woollan (our Language Assistant) for helping them prepare and soldiering on in remote learning by running individual speaking sessions with students via Webex.
Ayako was recently selected by the Department of Education to assist in the Model UN run in Japanese. This was an honour for her and Fairhills High School.
The penpal project is catching on. We now have a Year 7 student participating. It’s an amazing effort to be able to write a whole letter in Japanese script after just basically 7 months learning Japanese. Well done Zachary Harrison!
