English and Humanities

Year 7 State Library Incursion

by Rhea Fernandez, St Rose

On Thursday 12th, our Humanities classes were lucky enough to be able to participate in an online incursion with some researchers from the State Library of Victoria, Alan and Renee. We learnt about the do's and don'ts of research, and how we can avoid false information. We dived into terms like fake news and disinformation. It was an incredibly interesting and informative experience.

Year 10 Theatre Incursion, ‘The Crucible’

On Wednesday August 11, the Eagle’s Nest Theatre Company presented a performance of Arthur Miller’s classic play, ‘The Crucible’ to Year 10 students and staff. Year 10 students have been studying the play as part of the English curriculum this term. This year the performance was enabled through the ‘magic’ of technology and was viewed via ZOOM.  Thank you to all students who offered their thoughts on the experience and following are some excerpts of students’ reflections:

I was very excited and anticipated the performance very much. The workshop was really fun even though it was online. I liked how the actors immersed themselves in their roles and they delivered an amazing performance. My favourite actors were Abigail and Elizabeth, as I feel they were really great at bringing the roles of the characters to life. Abigail's scream during the trial really shocked me and I felt the effort that they had put into these roles and was really grateful... My favourite part of this performance was definitely the trial, as seeing all of the actor's act together was really cool.  I want to thank you and all the English teachers for giving me this experience to watch the Eagle's Nest performance and hope that others also had lots of fun watching. I thought The Crucible performance was interesting and entertaining. I found that the person who played Danforth had the best performance. His voice and tone depicted the character so well, I saw so many similarities between his performance with the actual character in the movie/play. After the performance I felt I had a deeper understanding of Abigail. The character is seen as evil and annoying, but the discussion between the performances helped me develop a new perspective on why Abigail did all the things she did. Cailani Sollis

I found the performance interesting, especially with the first scene, to see two different ways of how it could be performed. It gave me a new way of seeing the relationship between Proctor and Abigail. I always just imagined the first way, where it was more filled with anger and they are trying to only benefit themselves. I found Danforth’s character performance the most convincing because I felt like the actor suited the role well. It really showcased Danforth’s authority over the court and how he easily believed anything the girl’s said...  Under the current circumstances, I feel like the actor’s made the best of performing online and the resources that they had access to. Of course it would have been better if they performed it face-to-face, but obviously, they couldn’t.

I liked Proctor's performance the best because he was really ‘into’ the character of Proctor. He demonstrated his emotions realistically to the point where I could imagine how the character was feeling. Abigail was also a really good character because the actress who played Abigail was in tune with the emotions of the character especially when she was screaming and crying…  Meryam Al Sammarray

Yesterday’s performance was very enjoyable. The performance I enjoyed the most was the scene from Act 3 where Mary Warren had supposedly bewitched the girls with a cold wind. I thought the acting was very captivating and accurate to the text... In between each scene, the theatre company discussed their ideas/opinions on the certain scene/characters, which has opened up my mind and has given me ideas on why the characters acted a certain way they did. The discussion helped me understand the scene more clearly...  Although the performance was online, which wasn’t ideal, the theatre company did an amazing and great job on ensuring the performance was as engaging as it was. Yesterday afternoon, we watched 'The Crucible’ performance by Eagle’s Nest Theatre Company via zoom. They performed four scenes from the play and I enjoyed seeing the play being interpreted in the way that they presented it. I found Danforth the most convincing character and I was very impressed by the tone that used ... One thing that I learnt was that a scene can have a very different effect on the audience and readers if it is executed in, for example, an angry tone or a sentimental or whimpering way. I had no idea what this performance was going to be like online, but it was pretty good and they performed it like they were physically performing it, with their emotions and facial expressions.   Mitsuki Otaka
